I see a persistent pattern here. Employees are not being valued, especially the backbone staff of finance. It's often assumed that the reason why people work in fundraising is for a passionate dedication to their cause. It's assumed that people work in the Arts because of passionate dedication to the Arts. As a result, most people who work in the unsung roles at Arts organizations and Fundraising organizations are underpaid and overworked. And the heads of the organizations wonder why they can't keep their staffs. You can overwork people but when you overwork and underpay them, you cannot keep them for long periods of time. And your organization loses its institutional memory. When organizations value their employees more, it will give space to everyone to do their jobs better. This isn't about more happy hours or meetings or perks. My vision of valuing employees is about knowing that they have adequate access to quality healthcare, a nice place to live, a support system in place if either of those things go awry. Right now no organization does this. Let us all work together to make valuing employees a reality and not a dream.
