Fundraising is one of the most challenging jobs, and finding a suitable fundraiser is equally daunting. During my non-profit hiring journey, I connected with many organizations seeking fundraisers. Some candidates had raised significant funds but couldn't sell themselves in the interview, while others could sell themselves well but had raised less. Through multiple conversations with amazing people, a common theme emerged: fundraising is often a very thankless job. I wonder why is it so hard to join a non-profit board? There is no simple marketplace to connect non-profits to candidates We've all read the articles: "To join a non-profit board you need to do these 10 steps" But what if you did not have to complete these 10 steps to join a non-profit board, but could easily identify a non-profit in need and apply? This goes against all the norms, processes, and systems created. Here's my thinking: 1. Time is money An individual that would like to serve on a non-profit board has already crossed that mental hurdle and identified their top causes of interest. The time consuming part is finding a non-profit organization that has a genuine need which aligns with their causes. Unable to connect the dots to success the individual deprioritizes the idea of board service. 2. Referrals from the network • Is a slow and time consuming process • Often times the identified individuals are unavailable for board service • If board members have overlapping networks, then the available pool of potential candidates significantly reduces 3. Volunteer 1st before serving We are made to believe that a great source for board candidates are your volunteers. There is a big disconnect here, because there is no easy way for a volunteer to express they are interested in serving on a non-profit board after they have volunteered. They are placed in the volunteer bucket and every future communication is for soliciting volunteers for a specific event. I am curious to learn your thoughts and also your path to joining a non-profit board.

Vital Hardware is a non-profit with a mission to empower talented young individuals from underprivileged backgrounds, by providing them with essential hardware and software tools. In the UK design workforce, 85.6% of management are white. Jobs for ethnic minority groups are just 13%, and senior positions are just 12%. Worse still, just 16% of creative industry employees come from working-class backgrounds. The creative sector struggles to find homegrown talent, particularly from working-class, ethnically diverse backgrounds and disadvantage communities. Pentawards is supporting this initiative through donation and by encouraging our network and community to get involved and help them reach even further in their efforts.
