May is Mental Health Awareness month, so we want to take the opportunity to spotlight some important issues in healthcare 💚 First, we want to acknowledge the hard work that health care professionals put in each and every day. Mental health is such an important topic to bring up, especially within the healthcare setting. Many healthcare workers are still feeling the effects of the pandemic and have more mental health concerns than ever. Let’s talk about it and break down stigmas!

How do we get to our goal of 90% of people getting access to the mental health and substance use disorder (MHSUD) care that they need? A new issue brief, that we signed on to, by The Bowman Family Foundation, highlights mounting evidence that the Collaborative Care Model of primary care increases access to MHSUD care, reducing health inequities and health care costs at the same time. Emotional Wellness and Mental Health are two distinct concepts that should be considered and treated simultaneously. As clinicians, we tend to over-focus on the medical model of our profession and forget the human aspect of it. It's important to not let a statistic manual drive your practice. While a diagnosis is a good starting point, it shouldn't be perceived as an ending point in the journey of life. Misdiagnosis can also happen; doesn’t have to be intentional. Rather, it may be due to the lack of competence or skills/training on the clinician's end.
