PAID internships beginning with high school juniors and seniors and through college need to become the norm and not the exception. Opportunities for on the job learning need to be accessible and achievable for all students regardless of their zip code and include the necessary student success supports. More regions need to bring coalitions of major employer partners together to co-invest and co-create business-led talent pipeline solutions - here are a few examples: Greater Washington Partnership New York Jobs CEO Council CEO Leadership Alliance Orange County (CLAOC) P33 Chicago and there are many more out there; Milwaukee, Houston, Minneapolis, and Indiana come to mind. I need to phone my LinkedIn network on this one because I can't get these stats to square. If 75% of new jobs require a college degree, while only 40% of applicants have one, then why on earth are 52% of recent college graduates underemployed? New report out today from Burning Glass Institute and Strada Education Network showing 52% of college grads are underemployed a year after graduation and - even more damningly - 45% remain so a DECADE after graduation. Links to both references in comments below. #crazy #highered #highereducation

As long as the world is self organizing, the people in it must be able to self organize too. If someone had a degree in farriery, if there was such a thing, and the automobile industry replaced horses at light speeds, thus, the similarities between the two different times, now v then, employers want to know, do you have any improvisation left in you, or was it diminished in your time being educated? The biggest opportunity today is your ability to adapt to the evolving environment. Can you walk into an organization and heal that which the environment is struggling with? Is your life about you or is your life about the lives of everyone that you touch? Is there a degree in empathy, courage, acknowledgement, curiosity, thinking imaginatively, and improvisation? The greatest need will be in the field of awareness and transformation and how to deal with the challenges presented by the status quo, where 99.99999999% of the people believe that the status quo is out there, some where, not knowing that the status quo is within the gap between the brain and consciousness! The gap is the time interval between sensory input, cognitive processing, and conscious reasoning and response. If your RDLPFC is compromised, then you’re stuck!

Catherine Brim thoughtfully reminded me that today at Georgia Tech is Employee Appreciation Day. Honestly, every day should be employee appreciation day. I would not be able to accomplish much without the incredible efforts made by the I&S team, as well as our other campus partners. Gilbert Delgado, FAIA, Jennifer Chirico, PhD, Jerel Harris, DrPH, MS, MBA, Tommy Little, David Goldfarb - Thanks for the efforts you make to lead your teams! We have a great group of AVPs that will keep us moving forward. In my new role as Interim Vice President of Infrastructure & Sustainability, I am fortunate to have each of you as leaders. Thanks once more to the other leaders and team members within our whole team. Whether grounds, building services, design, construction, planning, maintenance, engineering, finance, parking, transportation, HR, EH&S, communications, analytics, or sustainability, we each are connected to our campus in so many ways. We are currently in the time of year where we are looking at past accomplishments and setting goals for the next year. One of the best things we can do is to work with our teams to have significant and aligned goals. In fact, these types of goals bring meaning to the work. When teams work together to accomplish difficult goals, we naturally develop a greater appreciation for each other. Thanks again to everyone and the hard work done each day! #maintenance #engineering #analytics #buildingservices #planning #design #construction #finance #sustainability #infrastructure #parking #transportation #hr #communications #landscaping #ehs

How to elevate your value as an Assistant. In a live Q&A for our EA Campus Community, Antoinette Dale Henderson sheds light on a common scenario: the "could you just" request that belittles the complexity of our work. As assistants, we're often tempted to say yes and quickly solve problems. But let's pause and recognise the value of what we do. It's not just about sorting out tasks; it's about navigating complexities, pulling strings, and orchestrating seamless outcomes. Instead of a quick "yes," communicate the intricacies involved and the value we bring to the table. By signposting our achievements and the effort behind our actions, we cultivate a deeper appreciation for our role. So next time you're faced with a "could you just," remember to advocate for yourself and showcase the true extent of your contributions. #executiveassistant #personalassistant #administrativeprofessional #administrativeassistant #personaldevelopment
