Earlier this week Sir Chris Hoy - a Scottish Olympic track cyclist - publicly announced his terminal prostate cancer diagnosis at the age of 48. While this news is individually tragic, diagnoses like this are sadly all too common. According to Prostate Cancer UK, more than 44,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year in England alone - making it one of the 4 most prevalent cancers in Great Britain. There are multiple risk factors associated with the development of prostate cancer; Age: The risk increases significantly for men over 50. Family History: Having a father or brother with prostate cancer raises your risk by approximately 60%. Race: African American men are at a higher risk compared to men of other ethnicity. Preventative screening is available on the NHS however, current restrictions for our GPs mean that PSA blood tests are less frequently offered, which will in no doubt be a contributor to such late stage diagnoses. A graphic recently published by Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. showed that there are currently 28 therapeutic assets in development that target #PSMA - a biomarker found on the surface of prostate cancer cells. While R&D in this space clearly abundant, it is still work in progress and therefore, it's crucial that better support is provided from external parties beyond the scientific community. With this years introduction of our new Labour Party (UK) government, and in-action plans to reform the NHS, it further begs the question of what more can be done imminently to increase awareness, reduce the numbers, and better care for men's health. #prostatecancer #NHS #menshealth #awareness

Earlier this year, the NCI Center for Cancer Health Equity (CCHE) established a new team of cancer researchers named the #CancerEquityLeaders. These individuals will come together under National Cancer Institute (NCI) leadership to advance health equity efforts in cancer care. “We wanted to initially focus our efforts on minority-serving institutions, which represent a rich resource of trainees, faculty, patients, and communities of need,” noted Sanya Springfield, PhD, Director of the NCI CCHE. “However, we made an observation on the other end of the professional ladder—the increase in diversity of our academic leaders and cancer center directors. We wanted to harness their collective expertise and acknowledge this positive moment in history.” The NCI recently revealed the three main objectives of the new group: 1. Assess the landscape to elucidate critical strengths and gaps in cancer equity infrastructure. 2. Prioritize the critical needs for expanding institutional capacity and achieving cancer health equity. 3. Develop a strategic agenda to enhance the #NationalCancerPlan. Last week Member for Rockingham, Magenta Marshall MLA visited Icon Cancer Centre Rockingham to meet WA State Manager, Colin La Galia and the team. Colin updated Magenta on some great developments at Icon Rockingham. The team recently received news that the centre's public-private partnership contract with Rockingham General Hospital has been extended to 2030, enabling more local patients to receive radiation therapy closer to home. Learn about the partnership here: https://lnkd.in/g-YKRrTr This partnership led to the establishment of the Rockingham General Hospital Integrated Cancer Service, which recently won the Excellence in Strengthening Partnerships category at the South Metropolitan Health Service Awards and was a finalist in last week's AIM WA Pinnacle Awards in the Customer Experience Excellence category. Magenta also heard about patient-centred initiatives, like the introduction of a Specialist Bowel Care Nurse, that are providing world-class care to cancer patients in Rockingham, Kwinana and surrounding suburbs.

📢 I was excited to attend the the second international Cardio-Oncology Conference November 8-9 in Cincinatti 🇺🇸with survivors of cancer, professionals, and researchers. Since President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated April as National #Cancer Control Month in 1939, America has been engaged in a steadfast battle against cancer. This April holds particular significance as it is devoted to #cancerprevention and #earlydetection. As a physician dedicated to the field of #oncology, I must emphasize that cancer is not a singular entity but encompasses over 200 distinct diseases. This diversity partly explains why our journey towards conquering cancer has been prolonged and arduous. Historically, the challenge seemed insurmountable, yet recent breakthroughs in #technology, #precisionmedicine, and #artificialintelligence are now illuminating our path to victory. We are approaching an era where cancer could transition from a lethal threat to a manageable condition. Indeed, significant strides have been made since 1939, bringing us to a pivotal moment in cancer care. Today, prevention and early detection protocols for cancers such as breast, colorectal, prostate, cervical, and lung are well-established. Despite this, numerous individuals either lack the motivation or the means to utilize these life-saving advancements. Moreover, the advent of #MultiCancerEarlyDetection (#MCED) technologies is expanding our capabilities, allowing us to identify and address a broader array of cancers sooner. The increasing incidence of cancer among young adults serves as a stark reminder of the necessity for lifelong cancer prevention, beginning in childhood. By instilling healthy habits in our youth, leading by example, and equipping them with the knowledge they need, we foster a foundation for lifelong #health. Cancer prevention is not merely a medical challenge; it is a societal commitment that starts with our youngest generation and extends throughout life.
