Education is a pathway to self-determination, liberation, and freedom. Earlier this year, Seleena a proud Kalkutungu, Waanyi and Torres Strait Islander woman attended the NIYEC Dream Design Summit in Naarm, where young First Nations Queenslanders came together to reimagine their ideal education system. Together, they explored: 🪶 What will make us good ancestors? 🪶 How can we contribute to the young generation coming through? 🪶 How can we mould learning environments to better support First Nations people? The Dream Design summit empowers young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders with the tools, networks, and opportunities to create real change in education systems. 🌟 Guided by themes such as Education Rights, Indigenous Nation-Building, and Treaty-Making, it provides a platform to design a future grounded in self-determination and sovereignty. Seleena shared that the summit was a "fill the cup moment" — a chance to connect, dream big, and lead with purpose. We proudly supported Seleena to attend the summit in Naarm (Melbourne). Watch Seleena's vlog to hear more about her experience! 🎥👆 #QFCC

🌊A new report from Ocean & Coastal Futures (OCF) and Pelagos titled "Ethnic Diversity in the UK Marine and Coastal Sector - Accelerating Change" is now available. The team explored the issue of inequality of access to blue spaces, the brand imagery of #marine science, the ‘leaky pipeline’ in universities and the lack of belonging experienced within the sector workplace and the root causes of the problems. 📑Alongside the research, a bursary was introduced for the 2024 Coastal Futures conference for 18-30 year olds from diverse backgrounds who most needed help with the costs associated with attendance. Dozens of applications were received, and seven bursaries were awarded to young people currently underrepresented in the sector. 📍Access the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eCTbpenP This work was supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. #EDI #MarineScience #Diversity #Marine #Inclusion #Equality #Ocean

"WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) has committed to supporting Indigenous and traditional communities in their efforts to secure and exercise their land rights. Already, more than 30% of the world’s land is conserved thanks to traditional knowledge and management practices. Only by building long term relationships, learning from, and supporting their efforts can we protect natural areas, reduce industrial pressures, and right centuries of injustice. Partnerships between conservation organizations and traditional communities is evidence of the importance of diverse perspectives in STEM." (2022) The new perspective on conservation presented in today's video is long overdue by today's standards: respecting, implementing, learning from, protecting, and upholding indigenous people's conservation practices. For centuries, indigenous communities worldwide have conserved their lands without Western interference. These are the practices we must respect, learn from, and continue in order to conserve our wild spaces. This is something that we can and should teach students. Breaking the belief that our Western practices and belief system is best is critical for us all. We do not always know best, and students can learn a great deal through this change of thinking. If possible, let students look deeper into one indigenous community's practices and allow them to share what they have learned. This will broaden perspectives and show students that everyone can make a valuable contribution to conservation efforts. What do you think? I encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments. #STEMEducation #Conservation https://lnkd.in/gYRPHD3i

Many of the virtual exchange programs we support focus on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), engaging young people through dialogue and projects. The final resource in our roundup on the #UNSDGs spotlights community resource guides being used in a virtual exchange today, the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC)’s Youth STEM Exchange, which connects American and Iraqi high schoolers for collaboration on projects that address environmental justice and biodiversity. Trained facilitators leverage the Smithsonian Science for Global Goals guides to equip participants with a framework for collaboration with international peers. These freely available resources offer invaluable support for seamlessly integrating virtual exchange into science education initiatives. By blending virtual exchange with the expertise provided by the Smithsonian Science for Global Goals guides, we’re empowering young people to take meaningful action on a global scale. https://lnkd.in/gSR6xf44 Learn how you can join an existing virtual exchange program that explores this pressing topic: https://lnkd.in/gsq5fB9z Check out the full roundup of curated resources on the #UNSDGs in #VirtualExchange: https://lnkd.in/erNfPCaQ

Assessing an assets-based environmental fellowship through a community cultural wealth lens Melanie A. Giangreco, Megan Ennes, Sadie Mills, Rebecca Burton, Mariela Pajuelo, Michelle J. LeFebvre & Alison E. Adams Pages: 1348-1367 | DOI: 10.1080/13504622.2024.2330090 Abstract Civic engagement in environmental issues creates opportunities for students to explore and combine interests in the environment and community action as well as to develop new perspectives related to social justice issues. This manuscript examines the outcomes of a yearlong eco-civic fellowship for undergraduates representing a variety of cultural backgrounds and identities. The program design and assessment employed an assets-based approach, with analysis methods grounded in the community cultural wealth (CCW) framework and science capital. Pre-interviews indicated that participants (n = 10) self-reported high levels of science and aspirational capital but wanted to grow their social, linguistic, and navigational capital. Post-interviews suggested that the fellowship enhanced all forms of capital, but further development of linguistic capital through improved science communication skills was desired. The assets-based approach allowed the program to leverage the resources, knowledge, and experiences students brought to the fellowship while enhancing areas in which students expressed a desire for growth. Recommendations for using assets-based approaches in programming are also discussed. #civicengagement #assetsbasedapproach #community #culturalwealththeory #undergraduateeducation #SDG4 #qualityeducation https://lnkd.in/g-bxXcJi
