I started my journey as an BDA in ed-tech which was dominated by male workers. It was a toxic environment and they would often use unprofessional language and slurs in the workplace. I switched to IT but my experience wasn’t great there either. I spoke to HR regarding DEI inclusion, but they refused stating that it wasn’t in their policies at that point of time. Having people with similar experiences makes it easier for anyone to share their challenges and it starts from representation. Initially expressing my true self was a task but having spent enough years hiding for societal reasons, I don’t hesitate to be myself anymore. Certain companies simply focus on DEI just to tick some checkboxes. Instead, they should focus on sensitising and extending empathy to the issues faced by the people of the community. Moreover, these sensitization sessions are also conducted by folks who lack knowledge regarding these topics. My ideas were also not accepted, probably because it might not have gotten them an award. A few people also felt these ideas were a bit “too much”. Over the time, I have learned ways to make a place for myself, stand for my rights and empower queer people. From my end, I have single handedly trained the TA team of my organisation to become more sensitive towards queer folx. I became the first and only person from my company who’s out as a queer person from India. I continue to work towards bringing a difference in the DEI sector and fight through the biases and policies. Because it’s important and if I can I will, because someone needs to. What keeps me motivated towards queer liberation despite some of these challenges, is my mother. If someone who has not had as much exposure as my mother is supportive, then any of us who’s working in corporate can too. It’s ok to be slow and at times, not be able to understand everything in one go. But efforts are very important. And these collective efforts will be what will take us to our goal. It was during an internal Pride March in my organization in 2022 when I came out publicly in front of everyone. Even though the idea of coming out at work and owning my sexuality and being truly who I am, initially felt very daunting it was also absolutely exhilarating. I received nothing but support, acceptance and encouragement from all my colleagues. We out and proud queer folx are generally more inclined towards creative fields. So the tech space in my experience doesn’t really see a lot of people who are out and open about their sexuality or gender identity even though there are plenty. The concept of queerness is still a little alien compared to other creative fields of work. That is why I feel, being out, creating examples and raising awareness about the LGBTQIA community is of utmost importance there. That is what I dream to change, especially with my decision to come out so openly in my workplace. This made me aware of the extreme privilege I have in being able to work in an organization which takes inclusion so seriously. This really motivated me to work more and raise more awareness about LGBTQ+ inclusion because if not us then who? I ended up leading the Pride ERG in my organization and currently am the lead for the India chapter of our Pride ERG across 5 locations in India. Not only did I meet some amazing allies but also wrote an article in Forbes India speaking about my experiences as an out gay man in the technology space and got featured in Times of India for the same. True inclusivity is not only practiced but celebrated in my organization throughout the year. It believes in the fabric of inclusion at the core. From sensitization sessions to experience sharing sessions and organizing Pride events and marches, my organization works relentlessly towards the concept of inclusion at the workplace, so that we can bring our authentic selves to work every day. I am glad that we are at a time when most Indian corporations including the one I work in are working towards that goal and creating a significant cultural shift. My journey to becoming a Brand Consultant wasn't as straightforward as one might assume. I explored various facets of the fashion industry, like merchandising and advertising. However, it was during my stint in an international PR Consulting firm that I found my passion ignited. The dynamic nature of this field, along with the opportunity to engage with people socially, resonated deeply with me. Being naturally extroverted, I realised that my skills aligned well with the demands of this profession, making it an obvious choice to pursue further. Being queer in the fashion industry has its advantages. I've noticed that it's often easier for me to connect with industry peers who share similar perspectives and are generally more accepting of queer folks compared to other fields. There's no field where one can truly thrive alone, be it navigating complex projects or fostering a positive work space, I've always relied on the collective effort of my team. One such memory is September 6th, 2018, a historic day when the Supreme Court of India overturned Section 377. The joy and significance of that moment was not limited to just me; they celebrated alongside me. I’ve faced my fair share of challenges but none because of my queerness, I am fortunate enough to have had relatively smooth sailing. Creating a queer affirming space is a fundamental aspect of our workplace culture. This includes actively listening to the needs of queer folks, offering support and resources as needed, and ensuring that our company policies explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We also celebrate LGBTQ+ milestones to show our solidarity. Additionally, I'd like to see more meaningful inclusion and representation beyond featuring queer folks in marketing campaigns and fashion shows but also ensuring that their voices are valued within decision-making processes. I hope for greater sensitivity and awareness around inclusive sizing, gender-neutral clothing options, and fair treatment of LGBTQ+ employees in the industry. As we celebrate Pride Month, I can’t help but think about why we limit this celebration to just one month when it should be a year-round commitment? I believe everyone deserves to be seen and respected as individuals, free from any labels. Pride Month serves as a great reminder, but our dedication to the LGBTQIA+ community is a daily commitment. At REA India, we’ve built a culture that welcomes and supports everyone. Our gender-neutral job descriptions, comprehensive equal employment opportunity statement, and learning opportunities, such as unconscious bias training and inclusivity & gender sensitization workshops, ensure our workplace is inclusive for all. We also offer insurance coverage for same-gender spouses and provide adoption leave to all our people, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. Inclusion is an ongoing journey, not a checkbox to tick off. There’s always more we can do, and we’re committed to continuously improving so that everyone feels they can bring their authentic selves to work. On a personal note, I believe that inclusion starts at home. By fostering an accepting environment in our personal lives, we naturally extend this mindset to our workplaces and communities. So, let’s use this Pride Month as an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to celebrating and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community every day. Together, we can foster a world where everyone feels valued and respected, 365 days! (366 if it’s a leap year :)) and not just for the month of June. I would love to hear what you are doing to promote LGBTQIA+ inclusion in your workplace. Let's keep this conversation going! In the past, only 1 out of the 5 companies I've worked at were inclusive. The rest were either living in their own bubble or had homophobic founders. Where homophobia was rampant, I always had this need to be highly protective of myself. I'd speak very little of my personal life and hide my queer side. Here, it was more important to just fit in so I cloned my bosses and showed up to work in white shirts and denims like they did, ignoring the rainbow I so loved. In the company where there were inclusive policies, it felt easier to express - be it how I dressed, spoke and behaved. It felt great to not put a mask on and even introduce my girlfriend AS my girlfriend at work. My mind was focused and this freedom helped me give back a lot. The joy of being accepted and appreciated only made me better in all aspects of life. After 10 years, I finally set up my own company and ofcourse it is Queer-run. In the onboarding process itself, we openly discuss our identity and how we would like to be addressed. It is of utmost importance to ensure that people are mindful of each other's pronouns, skills and boundaries alongside helping each other be their most authentic selves. The key for us is to always encourage conversations and ask people to engage and understand, rather than make assumptions. An open door policy alongside workshops and activities also help us come together as a work-unit while concentrating on understanding our backgrounds. We also highly believe in flexible working hours, WFH days and mental health leaves. Without the stress of commuting and presenting themselves, my employees have more mind-space to explore their creativity at work. On the other hand, we also have employees who'd rather come in to work as they get to be their authentic selves here and get a break from their natal families. Our policies & systems are all built to adapt to each individual and this is reiterated in various ways from day one. My lots of hardest-time friends say, "That is why I didn't take JU. JU is not the good place for PWD. JU is not a good place for extremely talented generous people". At first, I get angry, but right now after 12 years of degradation seeing reality, I always think, if I had a time machine then I would definitely go to the past and change it like Flash. JU, Presi is not a proper place for PWD and LGBTQ. I mean if I see any disabled boy or girl, LGBTQ right now asking about JU, I always say, avoid it better go for the private colleges or IITs. If you look carefully the people of JU who are at the top actually later passed out from IIM/IIT/ISI. Now, think carefully. #Corporate #Company #Work #Culture #Job #freelance #Hiring #People #Women #Men #Management #Disability #Hardwork #hrcommunity #layoffs #hrmanager #Employee #Seniors #Placement #HR #Consulting #Management #Kolkata #DEI #Freshers #placement #interview #linkedin #naukri #jobhunters #DisabilityInclusion #hrscams #scams #scamalert #recruitmentscams #diversity #DiversityInclusion #equality #UK #Europe #US #India #bengali #singapore #bengaliculture #Equality #LGBTQ #lgbtq #owner #entrepreneur #IBM #TCS #Infosys #EY #PWC #MentalHealth #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #jobhunt #jobseekers #GenderEquality #capgemini #Bangalore #westbengal #bengali

Today marks the last day of June, also known as Pride Month. Throughout this month, many companies have showcased their support for the LGBTQIA+ community with rainbow-themed logos, events, and messages. While these efforts during pride month are generally well-intentioned, they amount to little more than marketing tactics for many. “I am very sceptical (of such initiatives). A lot of tech companies, even those with diversity initiatives, limit these efforts to certain seasons. Diversity initiatives are often seasonal, which is why leaders or even entry-level employees may find pronouns or diversity initiatives not impactful and long-lasting,” Sujoy Das (He/Him/His), financial analyst, told me some time ago during our discussion on how companies can make it better for queer employees and what the right usage of pronouns can lead to. Das stands at the intersection of being a gay man with a disability and is an active leader in the DE&I space. This sporadic approach dilutes the effectiveness of these initiatives and fails to reach the wider audience it aims to support. Pronouns, gender inclusivity, and intersectionality are crucial topics that need ongoing attention and commitment, not just seasonal acknowledgement. In India, cultural and historical contexts further complicate the conversation around pronouns. Traditionally, many Indian languages, such as Bengali, have always had gender-neutral pronouns. However, this linguistic neutrality does not automatically translate to a more inclusive culture. “There are a lot of cultural nuances around discrimination that need to be unlearned and relearned. This is not a cultural debate; it’s fundamentally about gender identity and what they choose. Pronouns are like names — how you want your name to be pronounced is how you want to be addressed" explained AnitaB.org India MD Shreya Krishnan in an interaction with AIM. As we move beyond June, I hope Indian tech companies continue to push the boundaries of inclusion throughout the year. Story link in comments. #pride #diversity #inclusivity #deiintech

As I pen down these words, I am reminded of the countless struggles and challenges that individuals from the transgender community face on a daily basis. My name is Roseleena, and I stand before you not just as an individual seeking employment but as a representative of a community yearning for acceptance and equal opportunities in the corporate world. Born and raised in Hyderabad, my journey has been marred by societal misconceptions and prejudices due to my gender identity. From a young age, I grappled with my inner conflict, knowing that my true self did not align with societal norms. Despite facing adversity, I persevered, pursuing my passion in hotel management and gaining valuable experience in the hospitality industry. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought unforeseen challenges, exacerbating the struggles faced by marginalized communities like mine. As the world retreated into isolation, I found myself confronted with the harsh reality of discrimination and limited job prospects, solely due to my lack of formal education beyond my diploma. Like many others in the transgender community, I am met with closed doors and raised eyebrows when seeking employment opportunities in esteemed multinational corporations. Despite possessing commendable communication and computer skills, the rigid requirement of a formal degree remains a barrier that I struggle to overcome. But I refuse to be defined by society's limitations. I stand here today, not just to plead for sympathy, but to advocate for change. It is time for corporations to recognize the untapped potential within the transgender community. We are not seeking handouts; we are demanding an equal footing, a chance to showcase our capabilities and contribute meaningfully to the workforce. I urge MNCs to embrace diversity and inclusivity, to look beyond traditional qualifications and acknowledge the wealth of talent that exists within our community. By providing job opportunities, not out of charity, but out of recognition of our skills and merit, companies have the power to transform lives and dismantle systemic barriers. To my fellow transgender individuals awaiting their chance to shine, know that you are not alone. Together, let us raise our voices and demand the respect and opportunities we deserve. Let us break down the barriers that confine us and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future. #TransRights #DiversityandInclusion #EqualOpportunities #EmpowerTransCommunity #BreakBarriers #CorporateEquality #TransgenderInclusion #LinkedInPost
