You can learn a lot about a person from the contents of their shopping cart. That's exactly what the New York Times did when they analyzed 283 grocery receipts from 27 different people. Of course, tracking shopper behaviors and habits and recommending cross-merchandising opportunities for our clients is also what our commerce media team does at quench. Like the New York Times, we also learned that people REALLY love cheese. https://bit.ly/3LJhCO9

From pretzels to pet food, store-brand goods are gaining on big-name brands: ‘Our food budget had exploded’ Goodbye, Chips Ahoy cookies and French’s mustard. Hello…Great Value, Private Selection and Signature Select. U.S. consumers are trying many tactics to cut their food spending: eating out less, buying less groceries and ditching name brands. That is boosting lower-cost store brands, which last year claimed 22 cents out of every dollar spent in grocery stores—the largest share ever for so-called private-label products. National brands are still king in the U.S., making up 78% of overall food and beverage dollar sales, according to data from the market-research firm Circana. But store brands, manufactured by companies including TreeHouse Foodsincrease; for such retailers as Walmart and Kroger, and are gaining ground, raising pressure on big food companies that have pushed their prices higher. #privatelabel #retail #groceryindustry MaryEllen Lynch Sally Lyons Wyatt Circana Jesse Newman Stephanie Stamm https://lnkd.in/egbCp4nr

I was on vacation last week and came across food packaging that practically jumped off the shelf at me. I wasn’t looking for pasta. Yet, my attention was captured. Greenomic Delikatessen’s Good Hair Day pasta stands out on a crowded shelf of predicable designs. It’s different. It’s fun. It’s attention grabbing. The packaging uses images of various hairstyles to showcase the pasta in a way that is playful and memorable—capturing my attention. Attention is valuable to retailers and advertisers—to the tune of several billion. Afterall, the average person makes around 200 unconscious food related decisions per day. But only 6 grocery orders / trips per month. To me, this means the average grocery shopper is in the right mindset for planning and buying their groceries around 3% of the time they are actually thinking about food. Grocers and advertisers we work with see recipe content as a tool to capture the 3% and meet their shoppers when they are in the right mindset. Planning meals. Building their shopping list. Preparing to shop. TLDR: Reach your shoppers when you have their attention.

"Don’t Call It an ‘Ethnic’ Grocery Store." Go on, take a look into your kitchen cupboard right now; I bet your siracha is beside your peanut butter. "Asian grocery stores are no longer niche businesses: They are a cultural phenomenon." Aka, our eating habits [and the grocery store market has evolved - well, some of them]. "Last year, Americans bought half a billion packets of Shin Ramyun, the spicy, beefy Korean instant noodle" For those lagging.. look up major grocery store chains! Queen's born H Mart [valued at 2 billion dollars and "Thirty percent of its shoppers today are non Asian"] lures with their magic mix of ingredients. Hint: That's terribly more exciting than your rotisserie chicken with a side of mystery coleslaw. Grocery stores have always been gateways for creativity [I'm not alone in seeking them out EVERYWHERE I travel]. We don't always need to know what we're looking for; that's the magic. "The sheer variety of foods to explore “brings more joy to the shopping and cooking process.” This sector is changing; you need to serve up something different, too. OR...you can keep calling it the "ethnic" aisle. But please don't. NYT's article below:

Has stockpiling food become a thing of the past? Before inflation and the threat of a recession, I remember when it was possible to head to the store and grab food you knew you wouldn't touch for (at least) a few weeks. Now, according to Ryan Daily, thanks to high prices, consumers have decided to move away from meat, seafood, and produce, and instead look to buy fresh deli and bakery items through multiple shopping trips. This trend has been dubbed “just-in-time shopping.” Have you found yourself stuck in this trend? #Snacking #ConsumerSatisfaction #Trends

Walmart is stepping up its game — and it might be coming for Trader Joe's with its new private label, Bettergoods. Bettergoods is a chef-inspired label with over 300 products, including fun and preimum-sounding ones like black-truffle butter and nondairy ice cream! Even better, especially amid rising food costs, a lot of Bettergoods items are under $5. Read Amena Ahmed's review that we published on Business Insider below. It's made me really want to head to Walmart to see what's on the shelves! #walmart #bettergoods #food
I tried groceries from Walmart's new premium house brand, Bettergoods. They were all under $5 and so good I'd buy them again.
