The oil and gas industry's commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050, as seen in the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter signed by major players, raises questions about the credibility of their transition plans. While companies pledge to reduce their operational emissions, some companies overlook the significant impact of their products' usage, which constitutes a substantial portion of overall emissions. A number of observers would comment, as the piece below does, that despite claims of transitioning to cleaner energy sources, investments in renewables remain relatively minimal compared to traditional fossil fuel projects exploration and production. The reality is far more nuanced, complex, and varied across companies: - some major oil and gas companies may be amongst the largest emitters but they are also amongst the largest investors in renewables, low carbon technologies and decarbonisation projects; this is however not the case across the board; - as they do so, a number of companies are evolving towards an integrated energy company business model with a portfolio assets that follows a disciplined capital allocation and focus on returns; to that extent, they meet not only demand requirements (incl. based on security of supply) but also shareholders demands for returns (in particular in a context where dividends and buy-backs are valued more than growth by the market); - the data shows significant reduction in methane, carbon intensity and emissions in relative terms, and there remains continuous focus from most integrated energy companies to that effect; reality though is that emissions are just not reducing fast enough in particular in light of the support levels of demand globally. Does it all stack up with the imperative of sustainability, but also affordability, security and the need to provide energy in a just and equitable way? That's where stakeholders, incl. financial institutions, need to continue and work in partnership with companies and ensure they have the right ambition, with the right actions, and right accountability model, all supported by data-based, transparent and detailed strategies. #netzero #sustainability #energytransition

A slower energy transition means higher demand for fossil fuels, heaping further pressure on #oil and gas companies already battling to reduce their emissions. #Carbon offsets can help. In pursuit of #netzero, many oil and gas producers are increasing their investment in carbon credits and developing offset projects. But the voluntary carbon market faces numerous challenges. What will it take for carbon offsets to offer oil and gas companies a credible decarbonisation option at scale? Find out in the latest Edge: https://okt.to/tPoC2Q

🌍🛢️ The Environmental Impact of Oil & Gas: Can We Move Forward Responsibly? 🌱💧 The oil and gas industry is a cornerstone of the global economy, powering our transportation, manufacturing, and heating. However, its environmental impact is undeniable. Here's a look at some key concerns: Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Air and Water Pollution & Habitat Destruction 🚫🌳🏭 These are serious challenges, but the industry is also taking some steps towards a more sustainable future: Renewable Energy Integration: Oil and gas companies are increasingly investing in renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. ☀️💨 Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): This technology captures carbon emissions from power plants and stores them underground, potentially reducing the industry's net emissions. 🌱🌫️ Methane Reduction: Methane is a potent greenhouse gas leaked during oil and gas production. Initiatives are underway to detect and reduce methane leaks throughout the supply chain. 🚫💨 The path forward requires a multi-pronged approach. Continued innovation in clean energy technologies, stricter regulations on emissions, and responsible practices by oil and gas companies are all crucial. 🔄💡 #OilAndGas #Sustainability #ClimateChange
