Today, we have built a Million Cases, Peeperly, OMGS and several other D2C brands, that collectively do over 100 thousand orders every month. Last FY we crossed 100 Cr.+ in collective sales revenue (Bank revenue, not Shopify) that all while remaining bootstrapped and profitable. Along the way of building my business, I realized a few things that I would love to share with you. Here are 4 lessons I want to share after creating 7 successful D2C brands. Lesson 1: You don’t need a fancy MBA degree to scale a business. → I don’t have an MBA degree, nor have I attended a fancy college. You can make a business as big or as small as you want. All you need is “speed” to scale it. Lesson 2: Keep it simple → Trust me, you can do great business without a high-end website, a large office, and IITians on your side. Start off with the limited resources and scale it from there. Lesson 3: Delegation Boosts Growth → You can’t make a BIG business without a team. Don’t try to do everything yourself, even if you think you can, you shouldn’t. Hire good talent, hold them accountable for results, and grow together. Don’t compromise great talent to save some bucks. That strategy almost never works. Lesson 4: Don’t Overlook sales → Business is Sales, Sales is Business. You need money to build a team, to invest in tools and resources, and for almost everything else that is required to be done to grow and thrive. So, track every step of your sales funnel such as website traffic, most viewed products, and checkout to cart abandonment rate. Make improvements accordingly. I've told this story quite a few times over the years and it seems to resonate with people so I thought I would share it here. The moral of the story is to always be open to opportunities and stay curious my friends. It was 2008 ✨ My career in staffing and recruiting came to an abrupt end. The market was falling apart, and some personal challenges had left me unemployed. I found myself at a crossroads with no clear direction. I assumed I would stay in sales, but I had no idea what product, service, or even what industry I wanted to focus on. 💼 The job market in 2008 wasn't exactly rife with opportunity, and to make matters more stressful, my wife was pregnant with our first child and worked for GM, which was going through bankruptcy and federal oversight. 📈 Because of the uncertainty, I applied for an Inside Sales job at a brand I had never heard of, MegaFood. I immediately fell in love with the Natural Products space and knew it was where I needed to be. After nearly 4 years as an Inside Sales rep, I knew it was time for me to challenge myself. 🚀 The company was acquired by a private equity firm that installed a great team of leaders, including Jean Lizotte, Dan Pearce, and Rob Craven. It didn't take long for me to see an opportunity to transform our e-commerce accounts, which were unmanaged house accounts, into a new sales channel. With the dogged support of everyone from the executive team to the field reps, we were able to clean up the marketplace and grow the channel from $0 to $16 million in less than three years. 👨🏫 In addition, my new boss, Andrew Dalton, took me under his wing. He was not only a great salesperson but also an even better boss. Andrew shared his extensive knowledge of the natural products industry with me and gave me the opportunity to flourish. Under his mentorship, I learned the importance of strategic thinking and building strong relationships, skills that would prove invaluable in my career. 🏆 Now, after spending the last eleven years in e-commerce, splitting my time almost equally between the brand and agency sides, I founded my own consultancy, eTail Advisors. I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience in the e-commerce space, working with both brands and agencies to drive growth and innovation. With eTail Advisors, I aim to leverage my expertise to help other businesses navigate the complexities of the e-commerce landscape, offering tailored solutions and helping them align with the ideal service provider. The journey from uncertainty in 2008 to founding my consultancy was challenging but incredibly rewarding.
