Clock gating is like turning off the lights in a room when nobody's there to save electricity. In digital circuits, it's a clever technique that helps save power by selectively stopping the clock signal from reaching certain parts of the circuit when they're not actively doing anything. Imagine a factory where machines only run when there's work to be done, instead of running constantly. This way, energy is saved, and the circuit operates more efficiently. Clock gating plays a crucial role in modern processors and electronic devices, helping them balance performance and energy consumption. Are you intrigued by hardware design but unsure how to begin? Quicksilicon's hands-on courses are tailored just for you! Anyone for a 50W GaN flyback? When I started out in the power electronics, I was told that SiC was the future. I was told by a senior engineer that, at the turn of the century, he was also told that SiC was the future. So it spent a long time being the future. I first used SiC schottky diodes in around 2014. The improvement they brought made me an instant convert (and taught me a lot about diodes in general). I didn't use SiC MOSFETs until 2020 but I've been using them regularly now for 4 years. SiC MOSFETs and the Qorvo cascode JFETs (big fan). What's next? Well GaN of course! Even faster than SiC but not as readily available yet. No avalanche rating and very weird gates because they're HEMTs, not MOSFETs. Anyway, I felt it was time to try them. My home lab was missing a high voltage power supply, so I made a little 50W GaN 240Vac to 500Vdc isolated power supply. Instead of all the complicated enhancement mode HEMTs, I used the cascode devices from Transphorm. These are similar to the cascode devices from Qorvo. There's a fast, low voltage MOSFET that switches a very fast, 600V+ depletion mode HEMT. The silicon MOSFET means that it can be used with standard analogue controllers like the UCC3844. I wanted to know, can I make a simple power converter with GaN?, although I appreciate I could have taken more advantage of GaN with a more advanced topology and a fancier controller. I designed the circuit from scratch in Kicad with some rudimentary EMC filtering and inrush protection and it worked first time! No FETs damaged in the making of this flyback! So yes, turns out that I can design a simple power converter with GaN. I expect that a more complicated one would also be an option now! Oh and also... this is also full of SiC diodes. GeneSiC have some lovely 1A 1200V SiC schottky diodes (GB01SLT06-214) that are great for this sort of thing. – #homemade #powerelectronics #engineering #qorvo #powersupply #innovation #GaN #SiC #transphorm #Genesic

Simulating switching power circuits has always been a tedious process given the long run-times, even for relatively short simulation end-times. To lessen simulation run-time, “state-average” models are often used as a common circuit abstraction. This comes at the expense of accuracy. There is a better way forward that provides both speed and accuracy to your electro-thermal simulation! In this article, we walk through several interactive online circuits that fully examine the challenge and solution for switch-mode power electronics using BCI-ROMs and “in situ” calibration. Explore these interactive circuits, where you can tweak switching circuit parameters and properties and re-run the simulation to see the impact. https://sie.ag/3YaigD #Thermal #ThermalManagement #PCBDesign

Clock gating not only saves FF switching power but the main power consumption saving is in the clock tree , which is why it is recommended to insert CG cells at the root of the clock source driving the FF
