Do you have a Black Lives Matter sign in front of your house? If you have kids, do your kids know what Black Lives Matter means to you? Your sign offers a great opportunity to talk to your kids about white supremacy.   Do your kids know that the police do not act in a vacuum? Fear, control and violence are part of the construction and maintenance of the structure of white supremacy in America. Our police departments grew directly out of slave patrols. They act as a critical part of the control and violence that upholds unequal and unjust outcomes for communities of color. I’m not anti-police. I’ll be the first one to call 911 in an emergency. And I have once experienced the relief and joy of knowing the police were there to protect me (I barely remember the danger, but I remember the feeling of being protected - it was amazing). I also know that involving the police means that anyone who looks like me is in greater danger. I know that anyone with mental health difficulties, autism, or other developmental deficits, is in greater danger. And I believe it doesn’t have to be this way. I believe if we can talk to each other and our kids about race, we can build better, safer police departments and a better, safer country. I know that talking to your kids about race can be difficult; I’d like to help. I’m offering a developmentally appropriate guide for talking to kids from 0-18 about race. Black History Month serves as a poignant backdrop for the Nation of Lifesavers campaign, aligning the principles of empowerment, community engagement, and health equity. As we celebrate the rich heritage and resilience of the Black community, the American Heart Association recognizes the importance of fostering heart health education and building a legacy of health. Why is learning CPR important for Black Americans? Black Americans have the highest incidence of cardiac arrest outside of the hospital and are significantly less likely to survive. Cardiac arrest in Black neighborhoods is associated with alarmingly low treatment and survival rates and studies have shown lower rates of both bystander CPR and bystander AED use in these neighborhoods. This Black history month, we focus on the history of the fight for guaranteed income programs. Rooted in the fight for racial justice and civil rights, GI programs were championed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, the Black Panther Party, and the National Welfare Rights Organization. Direct cash payments are a solution to systemic inequity which disproportionately impacts Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in our communities. The Oakland Resilient Families Program has been providing unrestricted cash transfers to low income Black families since 2021. The program has combated poverty by allowing families to afford their basic needs, stabilize their household finances, resolve debt, and build savings for emergencies. Too often, wealth is equated with morality, ignoring the historical and systemic factors that keep families trapped in cyclical poverty for generations. Guaranteed income programs allow families an opportunity to stabilize their households and break the cycle.

The next time you feel alone in the world consider this: even a simple act like buying a loaf of bread connects you with a sprawling network of people, processes, and places. While we often think of community as the people in our immediate surroundings, it isn't limited to what's immediately visible.
