Delighted to see our Partner, Mark Turner quoted in the Law Society Gazette, talking about the sharp rise in the number of successful cyber-attacks on UK law firms over the past year. Successful cyberattacks on law firms rose 77% in the past year to 954, up from 538 the year previous. Criminals see law firms as particularly attractive targets due to the sensitive data that they hold. That sensitive data makes law firms potentially susceptible to blackmail demands from the criminal gangs, threatening to post data online, or lock firms out of accessing their data. Law firms are especially worried as to how these attacks would impact their relationships with their clients. According to GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre, nearly three-quarters of the UK’s top 100 law firms have been impacted by a cyber-attack. https://bit.ly/3Mw5r7A #Cyberattacks #Ransomware #LawFirms #Cybersecurity

Law firms are a favorite for hackers (as they are known to pay ransoms). But it’s often their clients, especially their clients’ secrets, that a hacker is most interested in. Protecting your systems from data and security breaches should be a law firm’s highest IT priority. The following threats facing law firms, depending on multiple factors, are considered the top threats. It’s not a complete list and it’s not in any particular order, but these 3 threats are considered to be the most damaging: 1. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 – Attackers spend time researching individual staff members or lawyers, then send an email (that looks legitimate) to trick them into clicking malicious links or provide sensitive data leading to data breaches, ransomware or financial loss. 2. 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗺𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 – Encrypting critical legal documents and files, locking them, can be devastating to a law firm. Ransomware attacks disrupt caseloads and can damage client relationships. 3. 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 (𝗕𝗘𝗖) – This attack targets financial transactions. Employees are tricked into transferring funds to fraudulent accounts, often large sums of money on behalf of clients. “Cyber attacks” on law firms are on the rise, says this The Times article. However it appears to be based on the number of personal data breaches reported to the Information Commissioner's Office, and of course not all such reports are the result of cyber attacks. As the rest of the article indicates though, it’s probably a safe conclusion to say that the number of attacks will be growing. https://lnkd.in/eRRfnjTM
