Like all aircraft operations, Drones as First Responder (DFR) programs need to consider #weather conditions to remotely pilot #publicsafety drones to incident scenes. In fact, weather monitoring will become more critical when technology and regulatory advances permit flying multiple #drones remotely and beyond visual line of sight. In this story by Dawn Zoldi for DroneLife.com about a panel discussion on digital weather systems at the recent DRONERESPONDERS conference, ATAA’s John Eberhardt said a resilient network of affordable sensors will provide an “orchestration of capabilities” for public safety and other operators. “We can roll out a half dozen or dozen surveillance and weather sensors and put them all together as a public network to cover a wider area and share it across agencies. If three break, nine still work.” John added, “And it doesn’t have to break the bank. Mixed mode networks drop costs dramatically.” https://lnkd.in/eabRmabH

Fun fact: fixed-wing drones are more energy-efficient than their multirotor counterparts, allowing them to stay airborne for average 1-3 hours and distances of 50-150 km. The British Antarctic Survey is currently testing the capabilities of specially ruggedised pilotless drones at its Rothera Research Station in the Antarctic. The Windracers ULTRA UAV (uncrewed aerial vehicle) is a fully autonomous, twin-engine, 10-metre fixed-winged aircraft connected to cloud-based software that provides Beyond Visual Line of Sight control. Capable of carrying 100 kg of sensors, cameras and radar up to 1000 km, the drones will undertake research such as surveying marine ecosystems and studying glaciers. If successful, the drones will offer lower-cost higher fidelity science data while reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 90%. #Antarctic #BritishAntarcticSurvey #CO2Emissions
