Supply Chain Update 🚨 Upon an in-depth analysis of our comprehensive data from the first quarter, several pivotal insights have surfaced regarding the pricing dynamics and delivery timelines within the European electronic components market. Notably, there is a discernible trend towards escalating prices and prolonged delivery periods for the latest electronic component technologies. Our company's assessments attribute the increasing prices to heightened demand, supply chain disruptions, and rising raw material costs. Additionally, extended delivery timelines are due to logistical challenges and manufacturing complexities. Understanding these trends will help you adjust your supply plans to optimize costs and meet production deadlines. 🔸 Analog High-End - mainly improved lead times. Commodities- lead times and prices are generally stable, with the possibility of slight decreases due to the expected price benchmarking. 🔸 Discretes In general Prices are stable. It is expected that the lead times will increase in the second half of the year 2024. 🔸 Memory Price and lead time levels highly depend on supplier and product technology, but the main trend is increasing price levels and lead times on latest technologies. 🔸 Opto LEDs - Overall good supply situation. Ams OSRAM- allocation on OSLON Compact PL Gen2. Tight supply on visual Synios P2720. Coupler - Lead times overall decreasing. Vishay - most products have a lead time of 4-16 weeks. 🔸 MCU & DSP Microcontroller lead times back to standard level. Microchip - lead times have been stabilized on low level. 🔸 Logic The lead times stay consistent at standard levels and pricing remains steady. Currently, there are no expectations for price adjustments. To ensure stable supply and maintain production levels, we recommend considering this information when placing orders on our website. About 6 month ago I posted the chart (1) about the ups and downs I experienced personally in my 34 years in the semiconductor industry (annual growth rate from statista.com). With our industry to approach ~$600 billion by 2030 each of these spikes translates into significant waste of lost opportunity or excessive inventory for the industry overall. Can we smoothen this ride at a healthy growth rate? And if so, how? I can see at least 3 different dimensions that are needed for substantial improvements in the semiconductor supply chain: 1. Innovation: Collaborative innovation leads to new concepts like “true demand” – an approach to identify the real market demands more clearly by providing an anonymous aggregation. Research Institutes like Fraunhofer as well as joint projects such as AIMS5.0 (“Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing, leading to Sustainability and Industry5.0”) (2) are working on innovative concepts to assess demand. 2. Trust and collaboration: Innovative ways to align demand signals between the participants in the semiconductor world require a common language and reliable joint standards. Examples for respective initiatives are the SC3 joint project (“Semantically Connected Semiconductor Supply Chains”) (3) and the work of the SEMI SCM Industry Advisory Council IAC (4), which is (among other activities) fostering standards for supply chain visibility and transparency. 3. Holistic approach: Putting the above pieces together in a digital form. Digital solutions are only one dimension – they are necessary, but not sufficient. Supply chain visibility platforms and tools need to evolve towards the new standards which will only be established step by step. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” (a saying mostly attributed to Laozi/ 老子). Our industry made already a few steps and the above mentioned activities are not the only ones, but there is way more to go. Looking at the cost avoidance connected to smoothening the ride every step is worth going for it. Maybe I missed the 4th, 5th… dimension of smoothening the ride? What do You think?
