HS2’s Birmingham Curzon Street station site prepped for piling this spring HS2 contractor Mace Dragados SA #JointVenture has officially started #construction work on Birmingham's new Curzon Street station site, with subcontractor Keltbray carrying out piling enabling works. The five-year construction programme for High Speed 2’s (HS2’s) Curzon Street station in central Birmingham was kicked off at the end of last month (24 January). The new station will span 500m in length and 70m in width, featuring seven #platforms, 38 #lifts, 33 #escalators, and a diagrid #roof #structure combining structural #steel and a hybrid #timber/steel cassette. Once fully operational, the station will accommodate nine trains per hour in each direction. Mace Dragados Joint Venture (#MDJV) has been developing the detailed programme with HS2 Ltd since 2021, when it won the station contract. Major early works are now being delivered to prepare the site for piling and foundations work this spring, with the help of enabling works contractor Keltbray. The geotechnical designer for the works is Alan Wood & Partners. Construction of the main station building is to start in the summer, with the main piling contract expected to be awarded this month. In addition, a groundworks contract is also due to be awarded this spring. MDJV project director Martyn Woodhouse said: “We’ve just started preparing the ground, started putting the piling mats in, ready for piling later on in the year. “We’re just about to award the main works piling. There are about 1,700 piles we need to put in. We'll get the first viaduct beams starting to go in next year, and you’ll start seeing the main superstructure works coming out of the ground.” Work on the station #façade will begin in summer 2025, with construction of concourse steelwork and the roof due to start afterwards. The internal fit-out of the station will start towards the end of next year and finish at the end of 2028. Operational testing and commissioning will run from summer 2026 to autumn 2028. HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd worked with WSP and Grimshaw Architects on the design for Curzon Street, which is inspired by the great arched roofs built by the Victorian railway engineers. Mace Dragados JV board director Jason Millett commented: “Building on the excellent foundations laid by the early works and main works civils contractors, we are determined to enhance HS2’s legacy by identifying and implementing opportunities to drive sustainability and achieve social value at every step of the way." Rail minister Huw Merriman said: “Curzon Street will become one of the most environmentally friendly stations in the world, and the gateway to Birmingham for future HS2 passengers. The start of construction represents significant progress for the UK’s largest infrastructure project, demonstrating real momentum in building the line that will transform rail travel for generations to come."

I will not name any builders here. The goal here is to let folks know that this type of construction is more common and all over D/FW area. I am already addressing this with this builder to take care of it! Can you see the problem? Please provide your answers. Let’s discuss what are the issues here and also what we can do to prevent these type of construction. How does it go unchecked? www.rshengineering.com #constructiondefect #newhomeconstruction #buildingcodes #realtor #realestateexpert #engineer #structuraldesign #structuraldesign #newhomebuilder

Building a Bridge over Water: Key Stages in Construction 🌊 Bridges are marvels of engineering that connect people and places. Today, let's delve into the fascinating process of constructing a bridge over water, highlighting the key stages: piling, foundation, pier construction, and deck placement. 1️⃣ Piling: The first step involves driving piles into the waterbed. Piles are long, cylindrical structures made of concrete, steel, or timber, designed to bear the weight of the bridge. They are driven deep into the ground until they reach stable soil or bedrock, providing a sturdy base for the structure. 2️⃣ Foundation: Once the piles are in place, the foundation is built atop them. It provides support and stability to the bridge. Typically, a reinforced concrete slab or a series of piles interconnected with a cap forms the foundation. It evenly distributes the load from the bridge's superstructure to the piles, ensuring long-term structural integrity. 3️⃣ Pier Construction: Piers are the vertical structures that support the bridge deck and transfer its load to the foundation. They are usually constructed using reinforced concrete or steel, rising above the water's surface. Piers are strategically positioned along the length of the bridge to maintain stability and withstand water currents or forces. 4️⃣ Deck Placement: Once the foundation and piers are completed, it's time to install the bridge deck. The deck, commonly made of concrete or steel, is the surface on which vehicles or pedestrians travel. It connects the piers and distributes the load evenly across the structure, ensuring safe passage over the water. 🔨 Each stage requires meticulous planning, engineering expertise, and adherence to safety standards. Building a bridge over water involves the harmonious integration of design, materials, and construction techniques to create a durable and functional infrastructure that withstands the test of time. 📹 Kalloc Tech (YT) 🌎 Do you like it?
