This week marks a momentous occasion as we proudly celebrate our 10th anniversary at R1 Construction. It's not just a celebration of a decade in business, but also a time to reflect on what we've built together as a team, the hurdles we've overcome, and the principles that have shaped us along the way.
Over the past ten years, R1 has grown not only in size but also in capability, expertise, and the relationships we've fostered. We’ve taken on ambitious projects, navigated an ever-evolving industry, and remained committed to delivering excellence in everything we do. Yet, none of this would have been possible without the dedication, passion, and hard work of our amazing team.
To make this celebration even more meaningful, we wanted to take a step back and hear from those who have been instrumental in our success. We had the privilege of sitting down with some key members of our team - Ben Tomkinson, Managing Director; Andrew Evans, Construction Director; Abi Bebb, Business Operations Manager; and Stephen Corbett, Development Director—to reflect on the incredible journey R1 has been on, the values that have guided us, and the moments that define who we are today.
Through their insights, we explore what makes R1 such a special place to work, from our commitment to quality and safety to the strong relationships we've built with clients and partners, and the deep-rooted values that have always set us apart. It’s this shared sense of purpose and community that continues to drive us forward as we look ahead to the next decade.
As we celebrate this milestone, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has been part of our journey and invite you to watch the video below, where we reflect on this achievement and look ahead to the exciting future that awaits us.

I think what's shaped the growth in the last 10 years is adaptability and our flexibility. I think the fact that we offer a wide range of services whether that be refurbishment, new build, we we work with the client where personal company and we all sentic in our approach through the years it's been a complete learning process for all of us, but we've always been open to change. We've been dynamic and adaptable and to grow that from three people around a table. 34 people. We've managed somehow to retain that family field that's supportive feel, which I just think is really precious. When we first helped the business, it was primarily based to work within the education sector and over the last few years we've diversified our offerings and we're now working in residential, healthcare, commercial, MOD and blue lights. Something I'm excited about exploring new opportunities, new sectors build upon access we've had today. We're using the same supplier as we did at the start, but it's something I'm really proud of that we've managed to retain our supply chain and trust them and they trust us, which is great. I think it's a testament to ourselves really that we're still working with the same clients we were from day one when we set up, you know, repeat customers. It's fantastic that they acknowledge us and our our strengths. We work alongside in collaboration with them to successfully deliver projects nationwide. About two or three years ago, social value would not really heard of it. As we've brought our work back in locally, we're really looking at how we can help our communities. We help communities further afield all the time. But to actually look after our own, there's been a real focus over the last two years. It's not just about the projects that we do and taking a box anymore. It's about going out there and finding out what our company can do. Generally that's not connected to a project that we're not obliged contractually to do, but actually just. Way that we're giving back to our local community. There's many projects which stand out as being memorable for different reasons, but. I think one that sticks out is should be for association. I think it's because when we first engaged with the clients they were working over the rated modular building. Whilst it was a good facility they had, it was like a patchwork quilts and we've now delivered a 26 building spoke state-of-the-art with fantastic film performance which is going to benefit the wider community for generations to come. One project that really stands out for me is bespoke gymnasium we installed in the ground floor for five story student accommodation Block and Warwickshire. It was an incredibly complex and challenging project, but also one of the most rewarding. Seeing it all come together was a real achievement for us. I think it's been a lot of achievements along the journey so far. Like I say, this is our 10 year anniversary, 10 year in business and I think winning the standard business group instruction is exactly we want to be as a company and it's fantastic achievement. For me, I want to go in business. It's paramount that we continue the success of where we've got to over the last 10 years for the next 10 years. We do that by focusing our three core sectors, education, which has been the backbone of the business, MOD, which is one of the emerging sectors over the last couple of years, which has been great, the residential side. If we can foster those three and drive those through, then it's going to be a massive, massive part of the growth of R1 over the next 10 years and it's exciting times. I I think the world of Bellevue. Just really proud as a team of what we've achieved. The way they've always managed is that they get stuck in. There's never been a hierarchy with Ben and EV, We're A-Team and we we get it done together. The emotional support that they provide, everybody is great. And we've got an open door policy, which truly is an open door all the time, 24/7. And yeah, very proud of what we've achieved together over the years. They're friendly, they're approachable and they're helpful. You can pick the phone up to both of them anytime. Day or night and they will gladly help you whenever they can. And that is a massive, massive bonus and not to be underestimated. I've seen the 1st 10 years, I've seen what we've achieved beyond our wildest dreams. So the most exciting thing is to know what can we do in the next 10 years. I'd like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all the staff and clients and everyone who supported us to date. You really are the reason we are where we are today. I look forward to getting on the journey together. Thank you.

In an industry when it’s a race to the bottom, how do you get the edge in over your competition when pricing groundworks packages?
It’s interesting to hear from some groundworkers that they’re looking to add more value to their bids when tendering for groundworks packages. It’s not surprising, though, given that everyone seems to be racing to the lowest price.
Recently, we put together a testing proposal for a contaminated site in London, which the groundworker included in their bid and the feedback was great.
Being proactive about potential risks and offering cost-saving solutions when talking to the right client can always be a game changer ✅

🛠️ When you work in an industry for decades, it's easy to imagine how you would run things if you were in charge, how you would treat your employees and what values you would prioritize.
It was awesome to chat with Chris Heesterman and Andrew Fettback and hear about how they got the opportunity to do exactly that.
Both spent 20 years in the electrical contracting space and have used that experience to shape their own company, Fettback & Heesterman.
Here are some of their key strategies:
💡 Horizontal structure: They spoke about including their team in decision making and listening to feedback.
💡 Field first: The pair always wnats to stay connected with workers on the tools and ensuring they have everything they need to succeed.
💡 Intelligent growth: Fettback & Heesterman have no problem saying "no" to jobs they can't crush or that won't turn a profit. They are interested in healthy growth, not just growth for growth's sake.
Congrats, guys! Looking forward to seeing what the future holds ⚡
🔌 Many people dream about quitting their job and starting their own business.
After 20 years of honing their skills in the electrical contracting space, Andrew Fettback and Chris Heesterman did just that to build the company of their dreams.
Now the projects are stacking up and their team was recently honoured with a Gold Award from the VRCA - Vancouver Regional Construction Association. But the duo is keeping their heads down and sticking to their values.
“People ask us about our growth plan,” said Fettback. “We don’t have a growth plan. We could do the same business as our first year and be happy. We want to be the best and only take on work we can deliver on. We say ‘no’ to more work than we say ‘yes’ to.”
