Some new work by my group has just been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letters. We developed the first successful model of the polarization of light in the night sky by the atmosphere that accounts for real-world distributions of light on the ground. Bottom line: we have a pretty good understanding now about how the atmosphere polarizes ALAN, which we already know has an effect on wildlife and especially on insects, many of which are sensitive to polarized light. A longer paper that gives the complete theoretical derivation of the model is in review right now.

In recent work, we unveil a novel phase exhibited by locally aligning circling particles -- dispersionless traveling bands. Interestingly, the particle current is neither parallel nor perpendicular to the direction along which the phase propagates. We explain the mechanism underlying the emergence of this self-organized Hall current using a minimal hydrodynamic theory.
