I’m attending the small pelagic fishes workshop, part of the DFO Technical Expertise in Stock Assessment Workshop Series, November 21-23 in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. There are two main focus areas for the workshop: Day 1 – will focus on challenges in existing stock assessments/management strategy evaluations (MSEs) for small pelagics (i.e., a lack of a stock recruitment relationship) and potential solutions. Day 2 – will focus on (mostly acoustic) survey design(s) from DFO surveys and how it is used for stock assessment. Day 3 – A synopsis on bridges/barriers to small pelagic monitoring and stock assessment, with potential solutions proposed.

Cost efficiency in the use of components such as cable ties or fasteners is becoming increasingly important. We spoke to Artur Hofer, our product manager for the fastening sector, and learned why it pays, for example, to choose UV-stabilized material when cable ties are exposed to long-term sunlight. If outdoor cables and wires need regular maintenance because the fastener is brittle and breaks, this not only costs material but also labor costs. You can avoid this by using cable ties made of UV-stabilized material, thus minimizing the maintenance intervals for outdoor applications.
