It is with great sadness that the R3i Foundation announces the passing of Professor Jean-Charles Fruchart. Jean-Charles was a titan in lipid research, whose contributions have shaped much of our current understanding of lipoprotein metabolism and cardiovascular risk management. His groundbreaking work led to pivotal discoveries, including the molecular mechanisms of fibrates, and his leadership in academia has left an indelible mark. Professor Fruchart's tireless efforts in addressing residual cardiovascular risk have improved countless lives through landmark trials and innovations. Beyond his professional achievements, Jean-Charles was a dear friend, a devoted husband, and a loving father. His passion for science was only matched by his kindness and humility. He will be profoundly missed by the scientific community, his colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. Familial hypercholesterolemia is caused by a gene alteration that's passed down from one or both parents. People who have this condition are born with it. This change prevents the body from eliminating the type of cholesterol that builds up in arteries, leading to heart disease. Tobacco use is a significant contributor to lung disease, cancer, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Globally, tobacco is responsible for approximately 6 million deaths annually, with an additional 1.2 million deaths attributed to exposure to second-hand smoke. While these risks are severe, tobacco-related illness is highly preventable. Quitting smoking leads to immediate physiological benefits such as normalized blood pressure and heart rate, along with long-term advantages including a reduction in second-hand smoke exposure, particularly for vulnerable populations like children and pregnant women. There are many risk factors associated with coronary heart disease and stroke. Some risk factors, such as family history, cannot be modified, while other risk factors, like high blood pressure, can be modified with treatment. People will not necessarily develop cardiovascular disease if they have a risk factor.
