Should grassroots tennis be protected from padel and pickleball expansion? This was the argument put forward by Novak Djokovic at the weekend. It would be interesting to know what the question was that prompted this answer, which has made headlines everywhere. Padel is growing and private clubs are investing in padel courts because there is demand and it makes commercial sense, but is that really to the detriment of tennis? Djokovic wants to see tennis protected and made accessible and affordable for kids - the same is true of padel. At the moment, it's predominantly an 'adult' sport, with efforts being made to get more kids on a padel court. The summer holidays are an ideal time to do this and I know that Soul Padel are running kids camps for kids of all ages to achieve just that. On the flip side, the LTA has been unable to send to a GB team to the Junior European Padel championships because there just isn't enough young talented players to fill all the age groups. So there are challenges for both racket sports, but I don't feel tennis should feel threatened and should look at padel and pickleball as opportunities for all three to promote racket sports. What do you think? #padel #tennis #monday #wimbledon

Pickleball could be the solution to get more people into tennis. We can all get along! There seems to be an undertone in racket sports that "only one" racket sport should be superior or accepted. Yet all can coexist. Gilles Moretton (President of the FFT, French Tennis Federation) was quoted to say, “We want people to come and enjoy and do exercise for health. Tennis is a difficult sport, and sometimes you need to enjoy and learn something quickly — and padel or pickleball is much easier for most people." This is spot on. It shows support for additional sports versus defensive tactics. I believe these types of statements could be the difference in bringing more people together. Get people to have a great experience and encourage others to find alternative health and wellness activities. Pickleball seems to have an easier entry point - skill and cost. But I believe the majority of the pickleball community is a completely different audience. There seems to be a group of people who believe people will play tennis OR pickleball...padel OR pickleball; leaving one and choosing another exclusively. There are a significant amount of tennis players who are picking up a paddle for the first time, and it seems that is all we are focused on. Yet, I think there could be an increase in tennis players from people who start with pickleball as a feeder for the tennis community. I'm curious to see how this unfolds. #sportsnews #pickleball #sportsmarketing #tennis #healthandwellness https://lnkd.in/gtNCUK4U

More than one year ago, I started playing the fascinating racquet sport of Padel. It was invented in Mexico in the late 60’s and during the pandemic it encountered an accelerated growth as non contact sports gained popularity during COVID. As of today, Padel has more than 25 million registered players with 40k courts available worldwide. Spain and Argentina are the main markets for the sport and have already surpassed tennis as the most popular racquet sport in those countries. Padel is still far from the global popularity of tennis, but lately it has become a threat, as the sport has many advantages vs tennis, which is generating exponential growth worldwide.

Does joining the tennis federation help or hinder the development of padel? All around the world, we’re seeing different examples of federation setup in relation to padel. There are many cases where the federation is setup separately from tennis as an independent body and many where it comes under the tennis federation, and there can be pluses and minuses to both sides. The advantage of having the two sports setup separately is that you have a dedicated padel team only focused on developing the game - including performance, tournaments, education and everything that goes around building the sport. However, it is harder to build awareness and get government representation. Being a part of a Tennis Federation can be great because it builds awareness of the sport within the tennis community and it makes it easier for tennis clubs to add padel facilities and padel courts as part of the facilities. The downside of that is that many federations consider padel a smaller part of tennis and don't consider it its own sport. Therefore, the federations don't give it the kind of push that it needs, or the dedication and representation that it needs. My views are that it really depends on the situation, the organisation of the federation and the development of the sports (both tennis and padel)... I've heard many suggest tennis federations keep padel close to prevent it threatening tennis or to boost their decreasing participation numbers - but what are your thoughts? #Sport #Padel #PadelTennis #ThePadelSchool #PadelTips #PadelLessons #PaddleTennis #GBpadel #WorldPadelTour #PadelVideos #PadelFun #PremierPadel #CoachPadel #OnlineCoaching

Great to see the continued growth of padel in the UK! We've seen that a key driver behind padel's success is a high level of participation in other racket sports. But as Ben Nichols rightly points out here, this doesn't mean that the popularity of padel need come at the expense of tennis. By its very nature, padel can be a great introduction to racket sports. It's adoption in existing tennis clubs as well as through dedicated padel venues can help to ensure the future of both sports. The Origin of Beach Tennis Beach tennis is a relatively new sport that combines elements of tennis, beach volleyball, and badminton. It is played on a sandy surface, typically on beaches or beachfront areas, with players using wood or composite materials rackets and a depressurized tennis ball. The origins of beach tennis can be traced back to Italy in the early 2000s. The sport was created by Italian entrepreneur Giandomenico Bellettini and his wife, Marta Menegatti, who were inspired by the idea of blending the popular beach sports of tennis and volleyball. They developed the rules and equipment for beach tennis, aiming to create a fun and accessible activity that could be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. Beach tennis quickly gained popularity in Italy and spread to other countries in Europe and beyond mainly in Brasil. The sport's simple rules and casual, social nature made it appealing to a wide range of players, from recreational beachgoers to competitive athletes. Tournaments and championships began to emerge, attracting top players and growing the sport's following around the world. One of the key features of beach tennis is its adaptability to different environments and playing surfaces. While it is most commonly played on sandy beaches, the sport can also be enjoyed on grass or synthetic surfaces, making it a versatile and inclusive activity for beach and outdoor sports enthusiasts. Today, beach tennis continues to thrive as a popular beach sport, with a growing international community of players and fans. Its origins may be relatively recent, but beach tennis has quickly established itself as a unique and exciting game that captures the essence of fun, sun, and sportsmanship on the beach.

🏓 From Obscurity to Dominance: The Rise of Pickleball In an intriguing twist of history and sport, the game of pickleball has swiftly ascended from a backyard pastime to a national phenomenon, tracing its origins back to the 16th century. Initially conceptualized in 1965 on Bainbridge Island by two friends seeking to repurpose an old badminton court, pickleball has evolved to captivate 36.5 million players across the U.S. This sport, a blend of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton, owes its lineage to the ancient game of court tennis, a favorite of Henry VIII. With its simple rules, inclusive nature, and ease of play for all ages, pickleball has not only been crowned Washington's official state sport but also stands as the fastest-growing sport in the United States. Its appeal lies in its accessibility and the community it fosters, making it a candidate for future Olympic inclusion alongside modern additions like break-dancing and surfing. 👍 If you're fascinated by how pastime activities evolve into competitive sports or if the story of pickleball strikes a chord, let's spread the word.
