The global grains and oilseeds research team, led by Global Strategist Stephen Nicholson, recently traveled to the heart of the U.S. corn belt—visiting Iowa, Illinois and Missouri 🌽 They explored how national policies shape the U.S. farming financial industry. The team also met with farmers specializing in corn and soy, who mixed their enterprises with cattle, feedlots and pork production. A key takeaway was that producers in the region are looking to boost revenue by leveraging certified non-deforested soy trade with the EU and low-emissions grains for sustainable aviation fuel. The group was impressed by the Mississippi River barges and locks that provide a significant logistical advantage, ensuring cost-effective grain delivery to seaports around the globe. #GrainsTour #SustainableFarming #AgricultureInsights Andrick Payen Eric Gibson Vítor Caçula Pistóia Owen Wagner Lief Chiang, CFA Marcela Fernandez Marini Vito Martielli Al Griffin

For centuries, many producers have been growing coffee with other cash crops for a number of reasons. But in recent years, with climate change, an increasingly volatile market, and growing international competition, coffee farmers have had to explore other ways to diversify. Many producers aren’t able to take on much risk, largely because they are already operating at levels that barely allow them to make ends meet. But one of several ways to adapt successfully is crop diversification – a farming practice whereby producers grow different crops that don’t compete for similar nutrients and resources as coffee plants. Happy National Peanut Day! Georgia and Florida are pivotal players in the U.S. peanut industry, collectively accounting for a significant portion of the country's peanut production. 🥜 Georgia stands out as the leading peanut producer in the United States, contributing over 50% of the nation's total peanut output in 2022, totaling around 2.9 billion pounds. With a rich history in peanut farming and optimal climate and soil conditions, Georgia continues to thrive as a peanut farming hub. Florida closely follows Georgia in peanut production, generating approximately 554 million pounds of peanuts in 2022. The state's warm climate and extended growing season are key factors in its successful peanut cultivation. Together, these states are instrumental in meeting both domestic and international demands for peanuts, underscoring their critical roles in the U.S. peanut industry. 🌱🥜 #PeanutProduction #Georgia #Florida #Agriculture #FoodSecurityIsNationalSecurity #NeedAFarmBill #GodBlessFarmers

"According to a 2023 report by BloombergNEF, carbon markets could be valued at $1 trillion by 2037, double what the global beef market is worth now." This statement stood out to me in this article about re-forestation in Brazil and I'm not really sure how to think about it. Is this a good thing? There is work that needs to be done around de-forestation but cattle can certainly be managed, and most often are managed, in a way that benefits their local environment. Without this, cattle production would not survive. At what rate should we trade beef production for carbon credits? Is the value of this trade-off even real? Is it credible? Are there short term wins for ranchers with long-term unintended consequences? What about the increasing demand for high-quality protein around the world? I have lots of questions... It would be great to hear some thoughts on how should we think about these sorts of efforts in Brazil! Josefina Eisele Ruaraidh Petre Laís Grigoletto Luis Adriano Teixeira Sarah C. #ICYMI - Transportation is vital for Washington’s farmers. “As a small farmer myself, I can't afford for my transportation costs to go up, especially with the wheat prices the way they are. We need that reliability. We need to be able to get our wheat to market.” – Michelle Hennings, Washington Association of Wheat Growers, speaking to the Pacific Northwest Ag Network. The Columbia-Snake River system is a lifeline for moving Washington’s wheat to markets worldwide safely, efficiently, and sustainably. Maintaining all modes of transportation—truck, rail, and river barge—is essential for ensuring that food grown in Washington reaches dinner tables locally and globally. 👷🏼♀️ “The U.S. agriculture and construction industries alone lose an estimated $100 billion of productivity a year due to extreme heat.” 👩🌾 “Heat can also stunt the quality of and volume of crops, losses that may not be apparent until harvest.” 👩🏭 “Manufacturers are also hard hit by high heat, which can cause machines to malfunction and leave workers needing more breaks. The California study of seven heat waves estimated they cost the sector more than $700 million in lost productivity.” https://lnkd.in/dThZAZEW
