MAY 1st - INTERNATIONAL WORKERS' DAY All Labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” - Martin Luther King Jr. Every year, on the 1st of May we observe May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day or Labor Day. What really is the significance of this holiday that would grant us a day off? Here is a brief history of Workers' Day... THE HISTORY OF WORKERS’ DAY The 19th-century America and industrial centres were flourishing and profiting from the hard work of thousands of workers, some of whom were employed to work for as long as 19-20 hours a day. The stress, duress, and deplorable conditions of the working class finally tipped them over the edge to join hands and revolt against the Capitalist system, with an 8 - hour working shift being their primary demand. Standing strong, the workers formed labour unions and on 1st May 1886, the streets of Chicago were replete with workers and activists fighting for a better quality of life that they rightfully deserved. Empowering slogans such as “Workers of the world, unite!” and “Working men, unite!” echoed throughout the streets. In essence, Workers'/Labor Day is celebrated to honour workers' efforts worldwide and protect them from exploitation.
