I've been working with Yes Futures for several years. Their aim, using coaches like me, is to empower young people to believe in themselves and discover their personal potential. We work on resilience, self awareness, communication and confidence. Their stats speak for themselves: - 95% of students improved in at least one Talent area. - 92% of students, including Pupil Premium and SEND, enhanced their essential skills. - 84% of students felt a positive change from the programme. - 80% of students became more future-ready. - 76% of students were more motivated to excel in school. How incredible would it be if all schools adopted this approach, using qualified coaches to spend time with those students that need that extra help. The results could be transformative. In a recent session, a student set a simple goal of speaking to 2 new people. The impact was profound - he found a new friendship group, leading to increased happiness and a sense of belonging at school. Small steps can create significant changes in students' lives. Intensive mentoring for troubled schoolchildren using football kickabouts can significantly enhance wellbeing, increasing happiness equivalent to an unemployed adult getting a job, a study of more than 2,000 pupils has found. Doing The Right Thing. Everybody knows Glasgow folks have one hell of a social conscious. That people are the heart and soul of the city. That it’s a city with a unique spirit and most of all a city that cares.. MCR Pathways is one of Glasgow’s finest inventions, an outstanding charity that gives disadvantaged young people the chance to create a better life for themselves. They’ve knocked it out the park year after year after year after year after year. Thousands and thousands of young people with better, happier and more fulfilling lives making their own dent in the universe as a result. Everybody overlooks things, everybody makes mistakes, unintended consequences, everybody is human. Come on Glasgow, let’s do the right thing, let’s re-open the budget, look a bit harder, dig a bit deeper and explore how you can give one of your most successful social programmes its funding back. Are you a parent, carer or teacher? At this time of year we're coming up to half term. Maybe your young person's in their secondary school, starting year 7 with two or so weeks to half term, how are they doing? As a teacher, how are your year 7's adapting to their new routines? Speaking with many parents and young people in years 7 and 8, we see that the year 6 to 7 transition can impact their mental health and wellbeing if not managed well. Often, confusion around friendship circles, the new environment with between 8 to 12 new teachers is so different to year 6 where students sat in their classrooms with one main teacher teaching them all the national subjects. Having a say in how something is shaped, progresses or develops is critical to both maintaining our sense of value and our mental well being. Football for girls and boys from as early as aged 6 years and above has the potential to teach essential life skills (communication, self reflection, resilience, team work, dealing with feedback, self motivation). Yet an industry that is reliant on the next generation, it isn't so great at listening to, or investing input from that audience. There certainly lacks a forum for children and their parents to input, discuss and learn about the sport. For many children the mystery and opaqueness that surrounds football can actual have negative impacts on their self development and mental health. I am trying to set up a podcast series for children and their parents to enable them to discuss, educate and learn about how they best engage with the sport. Answering questions from how to get into the sport, get the best out of it, manage themselves, integrate with their team, create positive relationships with their clubs and how to encourage their parents to behave on the sidelines. Children will submit questions and the footballing experts and psychologists will discuss and provide their wisdom on the issue. Combining football and psychology - what's there not to like about that! We have the support of many clubs, ex-footballers, sports psychologists, coaches, physio's, refs etc - who have all volunteered to commit time to contribute to the series. We also have 2 ex England Lionesses who have kindly volunteered their time to co-host the series. Given we want this to be an independent charitable free to access resource - we do need to raise some funds to get the first few episodes off the ground and pay for all the technical production, editing etc. We need around £3000 to get going. Not a great amount really for a worthwhile cause. Lots of scientific evidence that football has significant benefits physically and mentally for girls and boys. For example recently a study with primary school aged children evidenced the cognitive benefits of children playing a game of football after school comparied to those that didn't (https://lnkd.in/ebck-ipB). Another recent longitudinal study from Australia found that continued sports (including football) participation during school years was linked to lower absenteeism, better attention and memory, higher end-of-school scores, and higher odds of studying at university (https://lnkd.in/ead__7zZ) While the benefits of playing are evidenced - we do lack many resources to support, educate and inform children and their parents in football - be that playing at school, at grassroots level or semi-professionally. I am teaming up with former Chelsea Captain and Lioness Katie Chapman to produce a podcast aimed at supporting children on their football journeys - whether that is playing for fun, being with their friends or wanting to be competitive. We will be joined by ex-players, coaches, scouts, physio's and sports psychologists to explore the issues and questions to try and get the best out of the sport for children. From understanding how to start playing and finding a place to play, coping with physical changes to their bodies, through to learning resilience and dealing with feedback. We do however need your support! Firstly, if you have children who play football or know of friends and contacts who have children that play - we would love you to share this with them and for them to get in contact with us. We want to include boys and girls in shaping the discussions. We are looking for questions, issues and topics that they would like us to discuss in the series. So there is every chance they will get a response to their question from a professional player. We will be recording the podcast in July and August - so please submit questions now. I recently shared with my family that I'm taking an online course on "How to Communicate with Your Teenager." My daughter found this amusing and quipped, “I think Dad needs that class a lot more than you do!” As I progress through the course, I’ve noticed the skills being emphasised are strikingly similar to those I use at work, when interacting with donors. For instance, giving undivided attention, minimising distractions, and asking clarifying questions like, “Tell me more.” The course delves into how each child prefers different forms of acknowledgment and the importance of tailoring praise to be most meaningful to them. This parallels perfectly with fundraising, where engaging and thanking donors in personalised ways is crucial. While I always believed I communicated well with my teen, this course has highlighted areas for improvement and reminded me of the significant overlap between our professional and personal lives. Given my work in fundraising for mental health education, I thought it would be valuable to share this online training created by The Kidman Centre UTS. Although the training is still in the research phase, I’m confident parents of 10 to 15 year olds will find it incredibly useful.
