Someone, I don’t know who, was quoted about the Robert Allen/Duralee merger and subsequent failure as stating, “Two stale loaves do not equal a fresh loaf.” And that quote has stuck with me over the past 5 years because it was such an honest and real illustration of the industry. And this leads me to Warren Shoulberg’s latest piece for Business of Home. It does not address unadvised mergers but does provide an honest and thoughtful perspective on the home furnishings industry. For me, it’s refreshing to read a take that is not full of new releases, market sensations, sunshine and unicorns when the reality is that this has been a tough few years. I had a long chat with colleagues this week about the constantly moving dates on production of home furnishings, particularly rugs. My friends, this is just one reason why that can occur. And it does not discriminate based on product quality. So whether you are ordering a super cheap doormat or a high end, hand made, luxury rug there is huge potential right now that you will experience delays. My hot take? Keep open communication lines with your clients about it now. This applies to everyone from the small budget design client, to brick and mortar stores to big box account managers. “Around 85,000 dockworkers will see their labor contracts expire Sept. 30, and a successful renegotiation is reportedly still a long way off. A strike could result in severe disruptions, as well as a potential rise in West Coast rates as shippers shift around their product.” https://lnkd.in/eMYKcdRT
