General purpose search dog trainer/handler cadaver land/cadaver water/ HRD/ trailing-instructor.- Founder & unit trainer of Wexford K9 Search and Rescue. Owner of K9 Detect and find Ireland.
People often ask me what dog breeds are suitable for trailing, some are surprised when I tell them that a lot of different breeds are suitable. Dogs are amazing and often referred to as Man’s best friend, do we always treat them as our best friend? Best friends look after each other and often bring out the best in each other. My retired general purpose search dog Rocky has three different breeds in him, collie, red setter, and retriever. The three breeds are of working breeds and were initially bred for different working purposes. I could see traits of each of the different breeds in Rocky from early on, I also understood all three breeds and their individual needs. It wouldn’t of suited Rocky to be an only dog or locked up for hours if I had of been away working full time. Rocky needed companionship and mental stimulation he didn’t like the times I kept him in the house either as he much prefers being outside. The second part to the initial question is… you could have the best racing car in the world however, you may not have the right person to drive the car. It works both ways.. Quote- ‘do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do’ .. I live my life by doing things for the right reasons and also living with no regret or ego. it takes a lot of work going all the way with your K9 partner. Rocky and I trailed three times a week ontop of land cadaver and HRD training. Having the right balance is essential and it doesn’t happen over night. A positive mental attitude goes a long way. Helping people understand their dogs and their dogs needs is a satisfying part of my work, understanding dogs and sharing my knowledge ensures a happier balanced life for both dogs and owners. #operationalsearchdogs #challenges #pma #understanding #caring #makingadifference #ballance #needs #opportunities #knowlage #peopleperson #doglover #ireland
