Characterising extracellular vesicles derived from spinal cord tissue in neuroinflammation: Pavan Bhargava at Johns Hopkins Medicine and collaborators analysed the physical and proteomic changes in mouse spinal cord-derived EVs before and 16 and 25 days after inducing experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a neuroinflammatory model of MS https://lnkd.in/eqy8utFa Their results indicate that EVs offer snapshots of critical disease processes, including CNS-compartmentalised inflammation, re-/de-myelination, and synaptic pathology, and may also play a role in mediating these processes. In the March special issue of the RCPA’s Pathology journal, which focuses on biomarkers in solid tumours, Richard Wing-Cheuk Wong and Annie N.Y. Cheung discuss ‘Predictive and prognostic biomarkers in female genital tract tumours: an update highlighting their clinical relevance and practical issues’. The evaluation of biomarkers using molecular techniques and immunohistochemistry has become increasingly relevant for the treatment of female genital tract tumours due to the greater availability of therapeutic options and updated disease classifications. These biomarkers often have a direct impact on clinical decisions but their evaluation is not always straightforward. This review article highlights the key predictive and prognostic markers for common gynaecological cancers, and discusses the practical implications for pathologists and clinicians. Find out more in the full article at https://lnkd.in/gXv6M42z. Read the full special issue online at https://lnkd.in/d4dhaSFG. Exciting findings reveal a significant link between optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans of the eye and renal pathology. The study highlights the potential of retinal OCT imaging to non-invasively monitor and serve as a prognostic biomarker for kidney injury in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This innovative approach could offer novel insights into tracking kidney health, treatment responses, and predicting outcomes, presenting a promising development for managing CKD. https://brnw.ch/21wIrNg #MedicalResearch #KidneyHealth #Innovation 👁️🔬

The remarkable diversity of precursor lesions and deposits suggest geographic atrophy (GA) may have a single etiology, but several related disease processes that result in a similar phenotype and late-stage expression, according to a study published in Retina. Treating patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and potential GA based on multiple pathway subtypes could allow for personalized therapy. Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys. In the United States, about 600,000 people have PKD, and cystic disease is the fourth leading cause of kidney failure. The most common symptoms are pain in the back and the sides between the ribs and hips and headaches. The pain can be temporary or persistent, mild or severe. Ultrasonography, the current imaging modality of choice for diagnosing Polycystic kidney disease. *Polycystic kidney with numerous small cysts. #Ultrasound #POCUS #Radiology #Sonography #Diagnosis #Imagine #Kidney #Polycystic_kidney_disease #PKD

Laverty Pathology is excited to invite you to join our virtual webinar to learn about the new PrecivityAD2™ blood test! Where: Virtual Date: Tue, Feb 20 Time: 7:30 AM - 8:15 AM GMT+11 This specialty test has been designed for individuals aged 55 and older exhibiting signs of mild cognitive impairment, to aid in the timely diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Our assessment involves analysing plasma for amyloid beta and tau proteins, crucial biomarkers for brain amyloid pathology. Employing cutting-edge LC-MS/MS technology, we precisely measure analyte concentrations and calculate key ratios. Which are then integrated into an analytically and clinically validated algorithm, resulting in the Amyloid Probability Score 2 (out of 100), providing a clear determination of whether the individual is positive or negative for the presence of brain amyloid plaques. To learn more about this innovative test, sign up for the webinar here: laverty.com.au/c2n-web
