Our consultants ask how to best prepare for interviews, so I wanted to share our nuggets of advice, in case it's helpful for someone out there who is in the job search. 1. Do your research! Review the company website, press releases and job descriptions. Showing that you are prepared and engaged will make a world of difference. 2. Jot down smart questions to ask about the role, company, and reasons you are interested in the opportunity. 3. Before the interview, create a quiet and relaxing place to breathe and gather your positivity. 4. Remember this opportunity is yours to take! Make yourself indispensable by understanding the customer's problem at hand and creating value in your capabilities and approach. 5. Be on time, which means arrive at the location or in the video meeting early. 6. Dress professionally. While the work environment is mostly business casual, you have one chance to impress. Make the most of it! 7. Know what is on your resume and be honest about your background and experience. 8. Follow up with a thank you, expressing your interest and summarizing why you think you would be a good fit. Good luck out there! The higher the position you're going for, the more likely it is that your interviews will be focused on telling people about yourself and how you work, rather than your skills and competencies. Here's what that means: The CV and the first interviews will typically ensure that you know what you're talking about. That you can do the work. That's easy. You know how to do the work. The following interviews, especially the more informal ones, with more senior people, will test your personality, your curiosity, your interests, your quirks. They want to know: can I work with this person? Do I like them? By their very nature, these are subjective. Which means that if you're faking it, and telling them what you think they want to hear, they'll see that from a mile away. This is good news. Because instead of spending hours prepping and memorising fake answers, you get to spend time with yourself and ask yourself interesting questions, such as: Why do I do what I do? Why do I still do this and not something else? Which part of do I like most? Which part of what I do actually annoys me/ I enjoy least? Why? How does this add value in the world/to a company? What do people think about the kind of work that I do? What don't they like? How am I different to all the other people who do what I do? When you reveal to yourself the answers to these questions, you don't have to prepare or memorise anything. You can use that information to answer any questions people might have. You'll feel honest. You'll come across as honest. And the people who hire you will do so because they like you. This is the best news. They hire you because they like you. Because you showed them the real you. If you're getting ready for an interview and seeking advice on how to prepare, then you've come to the right place. Here are some of the things I do before an interview to prepare: ➞ Check what the company is up to lately by reading articles and checking social media. ➞ Analyzing the job post for a comprehensive understanding of the job description, responsibilities, and title. ➞ Practice answering common questions like "tell me about yourself" and "why do you want to work here?" ➞ Prepare questions to ask at the end, both general ones and specific ones based on my research. ➞ Learn about the industry and competitors to show I know what's going on. ➞ Aligning my skills and experiences with the keyrequirements outlined in the job description. ➞ If possible, talk to current or past employees to learn about the company culture. ➞ Think about possible situations and have stories ready that show my skills. ➞ Familiarizing myself with the company's mission,values, and any recent achievements to demonstrate genuine interest. 🚫 How to Ensure You Don't Get the Job: A COO's Guide 🚫 Let's face it, we've all had those cringe-worthy moments in job interviews. After interviewing thousands of candidates, I've seen it all. Here are my top 5 tips on how to avoid a guaranteed rejection: 1️⃣ Zero Questions, Zero Chance: Walking into an interview without any questions prepared is like arriving at a potluck empty-handed. It's a surefire way to show a lack of curiosity and interest. 2️⃣ Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk: Don't just tell us you're a team player or a problem-solver; show us with concrete examples. Interviewers can smell vague statements from a mile away. 3️⃣ Bring the Energy: Ever interviewed someone who looked like they'd rather be anywhere else? Yeah, not a good look. Show some enthusiasm for the role and the company—it goes a long way! 4️⃣ Preparation is Key: Case studies and role plays aren't just for show. Starting a job search in 2024? Here are some tips to help you ✨ stand out ✨ during your interviews with the team: ⭐ Ask Questions: The folks you’ll be speaking with are likely in this work everyday. They’ll be able to answer really specific questions around job responsibilities, team goals, and what success looks like for that position. ⭐ Be Prepared: If this is a virtual interview, make sure you’re in a quiet environment with stable internet. Silence your phone, and join the call early in case you run into any technical difficulties. If this is on-site, give yourself some extra time to get there so you aren’t feeling rushed. ⭐ Do Your Research: Review the job description ahead of time. Get familiar with the company, the team, and who you’re going to be interviewing with. This will help guide the conversation, and you’ll feel more confident when answering questions. ⭐ Speak to Specific Examples: When answering interview questions, be prepared to share actual experiences. Are you being asked how you navigate difficult conversations? Think of a time when you were working on a project with challenging partners. Walk the team through that experience, what your role was, and the outcome! ⭐ Share Your Excitement: Be ready to speak to why you’re excited about the role and the company - and also be prepared to share why you’d be the right candidate for that role. ⭐ Follow Up: A Thank You email goes a LONG way! Individualize it for each person - this shows that you were actively listening during your interviews. Here's an interview tip: Don't try too hard to fit a role that just doesn't click. When we're eager to land a job, it's easy to contort ourselves to match a position that only partly fits. During interviews, giving textbook answers is not going to get you across the finish line. Demonstrating, through examples how you've applied those skills in your current or previous roles is what truly matters. When you draw a blank on examples, it creates this sort of uncertainty, a "Wait, did they really do this?" kind of feeling. That uncertainty? It spells out risk to employers and potentially is why you're missing out on the role. ➔ If you didn't individually contribute using those skills, be transparent about it. ➔ If you haven't applied those skills in your current or previous roles, be honest. ➔ If what they're asking wasn't part of your primary role and responsibilities, clarify that. Avoid assuming providing textbook answers will mask the lack of experience. Not having specific examples of "how" you applied those skills and the resulting impact will prove otherwise. _______________ Actionable item: Right now, using the STAR method, write down those responses. Example: What technologies do the roles require you to know? ➔ What situation prompted the use of that technology? ➔ What tasks did you use that technology for? ➔ What actions did you take with that technology (your responsibilities)? ➔ What were the results of those actions? _______________ Hope this helps someone today.
