Tons of useful insight here. I have found that being an editor of popular articles is more gratifying than editing academic journals. It may be a fault of my own, but I could never find or motivate referees when I used to be a journal editor. On the other hand, it seems like our short-cut world renders much of your piece as almost quaint. Some writers may still want to hire a pre-submission editor for style and persuasion. But for APA compliance or ESL, why not just "hire" your local AI? As for getting an editor to "assess the rigor of your methodology"? This is the role of referees and dissertation advisers. Thanks for writing and posting.
"Generalists can make particularly effective editors. Why? Because they’re not familiar with the content they edit and can easily see what’s missing." My latest with Inside Higher Ed, about why you might want to hire a generalist editor--specialists will always have their place, but generalists serve an important role, too! 📖 ✍

This is a really great time to hire journalists. Don't get me wrong — it's a bad time for the news industry. But if your marketing team is looking for fresh ideas, a lot of highly experienced writers and editors have been made redundant this year and are actively looking for new engagements. If your organization has been trying to make a bigger impact through content, consider hiring a journalist. We learn quickly, know how to ask the right questions and love a deadline. Need a recommendation or referral for your particular sector? Message me — I'm happy to make connections and introductions! #contentmarketing #contentstrategy

I had assumed that once I finished my M.A. in Interactive Journalism (American University), that my next gig would be in news media, primarily writing for an online platform. I've ended-up sticking with the federal judiciary and became a Research Analyst who primarily does a lot of website work (website management, design & content creation, training, consulting, etc.) along with report writing. I really enjoy the web and techie stuff, which I would've never guessed when I started my graduate program. Go figure :) #AmericanUniversity #websites #technology #workplace #careers

When recent grads doing the requisite networking rounds ask me my best advice for breaking into journalism, I always have two words: TRADE PUBS. Many of them have never heard the term, and they’re seriously limiting their job search as a result. Trade publications -- or niche industry news sources for a group of dedicated, well-informed, sector-specific readers -- are a fantastic place to cut your teeth. You’re never just getting coffee or making copies there as a new hire. In my experience, from day one, you’ll be reporting and writing and learning everything you can about whatever the paper covers, be it nonferrous metals (hello, me in 2008!) or telecom or annuities or what have you. Every industry has a trade pub of record, and there’s no better way to learn the ropes fast. And the travel! While I was covering the global metal markets in my early 20s, I traveled to Bahrain, Chile, Germany, Mexico, the UK and throughout the continental US to attend conferences, tour smelters and meet sources. Sure, sometimes, I’d wonder if understanding the world’s alumina trade or China’s flat-rolled steel demand was too niche a skillset. But now, from my perch of senior editor for energy and commodities at Bloomberg News, I realize it was truly the best foundation. On that note, my friend Cliff White, executive editor at SeafoodSource, tells me he’s hiring an associate editor. Employees can be based anywhere in the US (though why WOULDN’T you want to be located in Portland, Maine??) This would be a fantastic way for an early-stage journalist to refine those editing chops and master the skills you’ll need throughout the rest of your career. #jobs #journalism #journalismjobs #editor #maine #seafood #hiring #jobopening #tradepubs https://lnkd.in/dmVwjqJ3

The copywriter you come to for addictive clean tech content | Creator of The Messaging Lab® - I help you hook your customers by turning engineer-ese into human words. | Ask me about the camel.
In a past life, I worked as a journalist. It was brief. And quite unceremonious. But dues had to be paid. Or so I thought. That was how I’d grow into the childhood dream that had brought me to the Middle East. And so I did what any budding journo would do: - I pushed - I pitched - I wrote - I worked on my Hebrew - I brushed up on Middle Eastern politics - I twerked (not really) - I interviewed - I met someone who, years later, became my husband - I drank too much coffee and not enough water - I covered an all-women race team in Jericho - I did a story on white rhinos - I covered startup after startup - And then, I quit. I soon discovered that a Middle Eastern newsroom is no place for a well-meaning introvert. I was the medium, trying to squeeze into a slender fit. It made about as much sense as roll-ups and ice cream. And that was that. Or so I thought. See, the other day, while walking Lili, our dog, it hit me: Yes, I’m a copywriter. BUT I think like a journalist. And the more that I think about it, the more I see that THIS is what so many companies miss about copy. This is the missing piece. You focus so much on your tech, and then you’re surprised that people don’t: - Care - Click - Convert - Buy Enter what I’m calling the Messaging Lab® - using journalistic thinking to turn engineer-ese into human words. Because journalists know a thing or five about WHAT stories to tell and HOW to frame them, so people will read them. And no, I’m not talking about clickbait. I’ll be sharing more about the Messaging Lab® in upcoming posts, so be sure to follow along. Word on the street: It’s addictive, but in a good way. PS.
