This week, RFA President Bay Fang participated in the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum in Bonn, Germany for a discussion on the danger of disinformation in democratic elections, and the growing threat of AI-generated content. In her remarks, Bay highlighted the broad authoritarian efforts to seed mistrust in democratic systems, as well as the resilience of Taiwanese voters amid China’s efforts to influence Taiwan’s presidential election earlier this year.

European elections 2024: #UseYourVote 🇪🇺 As an international technology group, we are just as committed to the fundamental values of our German constitution as our owner, the Körber-Stiftung. Our firm belief is that human dignity is inviolable, and that no one should be discriminated against on account of their gender, origin, language or background, faith, or political beliefs. It is essential for our democracy to uphold the principles of the rule of law, the independence of the media and the inalienability of human rights. We oppose any political movement that calls these values into question and threatens our open society, such as extremist ideas, people who act with hatred, incitement or violence against our democracy. And we encourage everyone to take responsibility and stand up for our fundamental values of freedom. In this way, we want to contribute to civic cohesion and a vibrant democracy. That is why it is so important that you cast your vote in the 2024 European elections on 6-9 June. 🗳 Use your vote – for freedom and democracy!

Thanks Maciej Kisilowski for reminding us that ''Despite significant economic and social challenges, 70% of Austrians chose to entrust their country’s governance to mainstream democratic parties. Their voices should be heard.'' I cannot agree more with your analysis and the interpretation of the outcome of the Austrian elections. Equally important is that you go away from the usual sensationalism following the success of the radical right at some elections in Europe. Is the support for radical right in Austria concerning and worrying? Absolutely it is. But it should not be a call for panic, sensationalism of defeatism. As you aptly suggest it should be about ''In the face of a consistent populist threat, democratic forces should not just roll over. They should innovate. Sometimes, the result will not be a unified “republican front,” but rather a loose assemblage of democratic factions that appeal to various segments of the electorate.'' I warmly recommend to other reading this article.
"Across Europe, far-right populists consistently frame elections as a stark choice between an indistinguishable assortment of corrupt mainstream parties and themselves," I write in today's Project Syndicate. "But if those are the stakes, a mere plurality victory for the populist party is actually a loss, and should be treated that way."

I wrote a piece for TheJournal.ie about how the media fared in the local and European elections; featuring dumb debates, smart use of smarties, why radio and politics are a good fit, the opposite of RTE bashing, and an appreciation for some of our better commentators like Fionnán Sheahan, Ivan Yates and Gavan Reilly. https://lnkd.in/e4FKkZzS

Here are a few key takeaways from Germany's regional elections. The electoral success of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the states of Thuringia and Saxony will prompt a period of introspection and reflection in the German capital as the country prepares for national elections in 2025 that could see Germany, a leading member of the European Union, shift towards a more right-wing political orientation.
The surge of the far-right AfD and the successful electoral debut of the populist leftist BSW in the regional elections in the eastern German states of Saxony and Thuringia have exacerbated the woes of the federal government coalition while leaving politicians on a state level (like Prof. Dr. Mario Voigt) with the complicated task of building coalitions that exclude the far right. Together with Amelie Hipp and Christoph Moosbauer, I wrote up a short summary for our global MSL Germany clients so they can better understand what yesterday's watershed election may mean. What are your takes on the regional elections in Germany?

📊 *Key takeaway from #IDDBrussels*: According to Kevin Casas-Zamora from the International IDEA, the Global State of Democracy 2024 report reveals that in 2024, one-third of voters globally will cast ballots in countries where the credibility of elections is at risk. With election denialism and voter apathy rising, it's clear that democracy needs our collective efforts more than ever. Organizations like International IDEA and their partners across Europe are working tirelessly to address these challenges, ensuring that elections remain free, fair, and credible. At ENoP - European Network of Political Foundations, we stand by and share these values, joining in the collective mission to strengthen democratic processes and protect the integrity of elections. To learn more about these critical issues and how organizations are collaborating to defend democracy, explore the full Global State of Democracy 2024 report: https://lnkd.in/dZGytH_F #DemocracyMatters #GlobalDemocracy #IDD2024 #IDEA

🇪🇺 #EUElections2024: A Shift in Power Dynamics The European elections have concluded, marking a significant shift in the political landscape. Preliminary results indicate that far-right parties have made substantial gains, although center parties have managed to hold their ground. This change reflects a new era in European politics, where traditional powers are being challenged, and new voices are emerging. The National Rally party of Marine Le Pen in France and Giorgia Meloni’s party in Italy have notably increased their influence in the European Parliament. These results have led to President Macron calling snap legislative elections in France, highlighting the impact of the far-right’s success. As we analyze the outcomes, it’s crucial to recognize the implications for the EU’s future direction and the policies that will shape the lives of its citizens. #EUElections2024 #EuropeanParliament #PoliticalShift #FarRightGains #CenterHolds https://lnkd.in/dUXMb5cw
