Fascinating article discussing special issues and how the growth of MDPI and Frontiers has been the reason for their exponential growth. The paper then looks at three journals from the "big five". They do not name the journals, which is a shame, but we can understand why. One of the conclusions is that special issues and article retractions are often due to guest editor manipulation. They do make the point though that they wished the authors had not anonymized the journals. As we say, we do understand why they did they did not, but it would be useful to which journals had been studied. ⚡🙈Journals = quality protectors? no more, unfortunately. Growing numbers of retracted papers from Elsevier, Nature Portfolio or other highly esteemed publishers are popping up. Despite that, most authors still want to publish in them. What are the reasons? 1. The momentum and habit of doing so. 2. More concerning - the wrong incentive system of IF ranking and funding dependant on it. Some countries have recognized the ill conditioned nature of the system and are moving away from it.
