I've been saying this for years... For some hospitals, positions like this have existed for just as long, but there is lack of much-needed standardization. It's exciting to hear work is being done here considering the shortages imaging professionals are experiencing now. When I was in my radiography program in the 1990s, I was hired as a "Darkroom Tech", meaning duties I was responsible for included patient transport, developing x-ray film, producing film copies, subtraction images, tracking exams for the technologists, etc. The closer I got to graduation, the more they allowed me to do things like prepare barium for exams, screen patients, help set up sterile trays for arthrograms, myelograms, and lumbar punctures, and assist with MRI patient screenings. This set me apart from the other Darkroom Techs (who weren't in x-ray school already learning these skills). I felt like I was becoming a more valuable member of the team prior to being hired as a technologist and I only wished there was a structured method to include others on the team in this training and competency. The same feels true today (minus the film/screen work). With so many technologists retiring and leaving healthcare in radiology now, with the new grad funnels struggling to keep up with the needs, the gaps must be bridged to allow hospital employees, professionals and practitioners to work at the peak of their scope of practice. Efforts like this can free them up to do just that with clearly defined roles and appropriate education and training. Who knows what the possibilities might be with patient satisfaction, productivity, and job satisfaction!

Biomedical Engineers and technicians are integral to every corner of a healthcare facility. You might encounter them in unexpected places, from the administration offices to the operating theatres, ICUs, and even the emergency department. They are present in laboratories, medical and surgical wards, outpatient clinics (OPD), and the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), ensuring that equipment functions optimally. These professionals move seamlessly throughout the hospital—whether walking down a corridor or working inside the physiotherapy department. You may find them in ambulances, ensuring life-saving equipment is operational, or in the mortuary, maintaining sensitive devices. Their work extends from the basement, where critical infrastructure resides, all the way to the rooftop, managing communication systems or the Chiller units for MRI. Biomedical Engineers and technicians are the unseen force ensuring that technology and care come together, supporting healthcare professionals and keeping the facility running smoothly. They are everywhere, ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of medical equipment throughout the hospital. #Biomedical #Engineering #Kaleidoscope 🩵

ARE YOU A NEW(ER) OD? ….I’d like to let you in on a secret. …Just because I care about optometry and it’s current trajectory. …What I am about to reveal will save you hours of time, money, and energy. …YOUR PATIENTS ARE NOT ON LINKEDIN. …I REPEAT…YOUR PATIENTS ARE NOT ON LINKEDIN. To build a busy successful practice has nothing to do with Social Media, especially LinkedIn. Focus your energy on your current patients, learn from them. Concentrate on your local community and your local medical community. What you do within the walls of your practice to improve yourself and how you manage real people, your patients, is the key to REAL success. It is so very simple. The profession of surgical assistants embodies resilience in a unique and profound way. These dedicated professionals stand as critical counterparts to surgeons, engaging in the high-stakes environment of the operating room with skill, precision, and focus. Yet, despite their pivotal role, surgical assistants have historically navigated a path where their contributions were often underappreciated by hospital administrations and staff, viewed through a diminished lens compared to their surgical counterparts. Jensen Huang of Nvidia, one of the most valuable companies in the world once said, "Unfortunately, resilience matters in success. I don't know how to teach it except for I hope suffering happens to you." This notion, though stark, speaks volumes about the journey of surgical assistants. The "suffering" in this context isn't just about enduring hard times; it's about facing and overcoming the underrecognition and misunderstanding of their vital role in patient care. Over the past decades, the narrative has begun to shift. Through relentless dedication, expertise, and the ability to adapt, surgical assistants have not only proven their intrinsic value but have also highlighted their role in enhancing team efficiency and contributing to cost-effective healthcare solutions. They stand not behind, but alongside surgeons, as indispensable members of the healthcare team, bridging the gap between administrative cost concerns and the quality of patient care. This week, as we acknowledge the strides made in recognizing the crucial role of surgical assistants, we celebrate their resilience, their journey towards professional acknowledgment, and their significant impact on the healthcare system. It's a testament to how far we've come in understanding that every member of the medical team is vital, and that together, we can achieve a more efficient, effective, and compassionate healthcare system. #Resilience #SurgicalAssistants #HealthcareInnovation #Teamwork #ValueInHealthcare #ASA #NSAA #asansaa #surgicalassistantweek #Surgikal

Two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to share my thoughts on personalized healthcare during an interview, a topic I'm deeply passionate about as a Radiographer. The discussion was a compelling reminder of how tailored medical care can make a significant difference in patient outcomes. Prior to the interview, I encountered a situation that perfectly illustrated the essence of personalized healthcare. A doctor had ordered several tests for a patient, and I was tasked with conducting some of these examinations. As I reviewed the patient’s history and the specific tests requested, I noticed that some involved higher doses of radiation, which could be a concern considering the patient's overall health and history. These tests would bring revenue to the company, but I remembered that as a radiation protection officer, I should justify every investigation before it was carried out. I decided it was important to have a detailed conversation with the doctor to ensure we were making the best decisions for the patient. We discussed the potential risks associated with the radiation and the cost implications of each test. By carefully evaluating the patient's medical history and considering less invasive alternatives where possible, we were able to tailor the diagnostic approach to meet the patient’s unique needs. The diagnosis was accurate, and the treatment was successfully managed. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of personalized healthcare. It’s not just about following protocols; it’s about understanding the individual and making informed decisions that prioritize their well-being. Personalization in healthcare means considering the whole picture, including the impact of diagnostic tests and treatments on the patient’s life. As we continue to advance in medical technology, it's important to keep this patient-centered approach at the forefront of our practice. Every decision we make should aim to provide the most accurate diagnosis while minimizing unnecessary risks and costs. Personalized healthcare is not just a concept but a practice that transforms how we deliver care. It involves collaboration with other members of the healthcare team, including physicians, physiotherapists, medical laboratory scientists, dentists, and surgeons. Understanding the limitations of your profession and knowing when to call for the expertise of another professional is key. The goal is to address the patient’s needs, not just to showcase diagnostic or therapeutic prowess. Let’s continue to advocate for and implement personalized strategies that make a real difference in our patients' lives. #PersonalizedHealthcare #Radiography #PatientCare #MedicalImaging #HealthcareCollaboration #RadiationProtection #PatientCenteredCare #MedicalEthics #HealthcareInnovation
