I manage media productions for RoyOMartin and I’m an enthusiast for all things communications and public relations.
Here are three lessons I learned at Rudy’s Jazz Room in Nashville. 1. A world-class team functions better jointly when there is room for each member’s individuality. --> Jazz gives each musician space to explore the music. Each person brings something unique to the composition. Never underestimate the power of individual contributions to your team. 2) A world-class team celebrates each team member's individual contributions. --> During a typical jazz set, every musician typically gets at least one solo. Have you noticed how the other players will step back and let them shine? And they give attention to their performance. They don't just “check out.” Plus, they usually applaud their colleagues after a rousing performance. We should celebrate when our team members give above-average performance. Never take those contributions for granted. 3) A high-performance team will always make room for a world-class player. —> The reigning world champion castanet player visited the night I attended (see clip below), and the band called him on stage to perform a solo with them. He tore the roof off! Talent recognizes talent and makes room for it. Fill your team with people more talented than yourself. Don't become the cap on your team’s performance. Please bring in the best talent and let them shine! Are you a jazz fan? What would you add to this list?
