THINGS TO DO ON YOUR FIRST MONTH OF LANDING A JOB👨💻 Alongside the excitement that comes with securing a new job, there is also a lot of anxiety and uncertainty. Adjusting to a new environment & new rules can be difficult but if you follow this handbook, you should be able to adjust accordingly and make a lasting impression on your team & manager. - SET COMMUNICATIONS STANDARD 📞 📵 Get to know the rules about communication in the company. Is there a predetermined time & place for communication? How does your manager or team prefer to be reached? Identify the tools and mediums your organization or team use in communicating and start using them. - ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS ⁉ As a newbie, there's a lot you don't know. Don't be shy to ask questions. Ask your manager the "big-picture" questions. What are the team's priorities and how can you align them with what yours should be? This shows your seriousness in wanting to get things started. - DEFINE YOUR GOALS & OBJECTIVES 🙋♂️ Reach out to your manager and get clear on what's expected of you. Once you are clear on that, build a plan to execute. Execute to impress by covering up on expectations early. - BUILD INTER-PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH YOUR COLLEAGUES 👥 Create time to chat with your colleagues just about anything outside work Put effort into getting to know them. You can do this by booking 1-1 calls with them. Find a mentor that you can meet just for anything. - SHOW UP TO COMPANY EVENTS 📅 Don't just show up to events that only concern you, If you want to make an impression, show up to all events that you can within the first few months. Get to know the key players and understand what the platform is all about. You have to understand you are in an entirely new ecosystem, the best strategy is to learn the behavior and norms already existing before you properly insert yourself 🤝 - ASK FOR FEEDBACKS 🙋♂️ Don't just assume you are doing the right thing because of your previous experiences Always ask for feedback from your manager and team. You are in a new environment with new protocols and standards. Feedback from existing members is the only way to confirm you are on the right track. Special care with language can make all the difference when calibrating your career change or career portfolio, and is part of personal branding. Why use terms like side-hustle, side gig, supplementary, moonlighting or casual? If it's where your headed with real purpose, why not use terms like career pivot, career dream, independent, project, initiative, scheme, going freelance or endeavour? Or perhaps even think big, with terms like enterprise, business, journey, start-up, operation, or trade? #careerchange #portfoliocareer #personalbranding #careerpivot #initiative

How my #portfolio helped me land one of Canada's #tech giants (editable #template below) Fresh out of #college, I was among a sea of professionals with no idea how to stand out. I had the skills and experience, but each opening that I applied to already had over 500 applications. How do you stand out? Frustrated by rejections, I asked my (already employed) friend, who suggested I should make a portfolio. My first portfolio was rubbish. Second and third ones, too. However, with consistent peer reviews and updates, I finally crafted a portfolio that caught the eye of a major IT organization in Canada. Before I knew it, I had proceeded to the last round, and there you go; it's been more than 6 months in my new role. So, here's the template I used to apply for this role. [DM me to get the editable Canva link.] If you've already made your portfolio and need a quick review, I am meeting more graduates this week!

I FAILED!!! I want to share my failure in a world where so many people concentrate on wins. On June 1, 2024, I got a remote job to manage social media accounts for an Immigration Law Firm in Canada. The employer offered attractive pay and I was excited about the job. I have completed social media management projects in the past and I did not think this one would be a problem. During the onboarding, the client spoke about how things would be different from the other industries I had worked with. Yes! Everything had to be done a particular way due to Canadian Laws guiding brands like hers. I was more excited about the role than understanding the needs of the client. In my first week, I made so many mistakes and delivered tasks late because I lacked attention to detail and concentration due to external factors. I found it difficult to adapt to the work environment because I was handling several other tasks like a Part-time social media management role and full-time studies in Digital Marketing at the Digital Marketing Skill Institute . I got fired after my first week but that opened my eyes to the areas I was lacking. I understood that I lacked attention to detail and started seeking ways to improve. I also realized that I lacked concentration and did not have the ability to prioritise tasks when multitasking. Instead of sulking in my loss, I see it as an opportunity to work on my weaknesses and be better at what I do. I see failure as a route to self-improvement and personal development. My name is Deborah Mbom. I’m a social media manager, copywriter and digital marketer. Walk with me😌 #socialmedia #linkedin #growth #marketing #copywriter #socialmediamanger

I'm just back from a couple weeks staying on my mum's tiny boat. I feel the most relaxed and secure that I have since leaving London and salaried employment. Why, because I made a big decision. Yesterday I made a small but important update to my LinkedIn profile. I updated the "experience" section of my profile. For the last 3 years I've had 2 open roles listed - Founder at Wytch Wood and freelance partnership marketing professional. Yesterday, I ended the latter. That simple act of changing a date and description on a platform marks a monumental milestone in my career. It is acknowledgement that I'm now fully committed to my own business. For the first time since the campsite was just a twinkle, I'm not looking for a contract to fill the off season. I'm not hedging my bets or caving to self doubt. Instead, I'll be focusing on growing my business, building my tiny brand, growing revenue, upskilling myself, better understanding my customers, deepening my understanding and truly committing to the principles that define my product, developing a content strategy that engages with my community - local and virtual, developing partnerships, developing additional revenue streams, creating a team and the environment for a team to flourish. So much has changed in my life and yet - that list is so familiar! How those actions manifest themselves will be different to past roles, but not the underlying principles. Nothing you learn, no experience is wasted, even the shitty stuff. All skills are transferable, you just have to take a breath, assess the context and repurpose those hard won skills. A change in direction is really hard, and you will question your decision but you know more than you know, and the rest you can learn. Or make up - then you will create something truly unique. Maree Kinder writing this made me think of you! You were and still are a huge inspiration 💚
