🔵 "Radiologists are at a clear disadvantage in Medicare's MIPS program." 🔵 As we've learned, there are not enough measures to allow radiologists to succeed in the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) as it currently exists. It is very difficult for radiologists to avoid a negative payment adjustment. This new paper highlights the need to expand radiology-specific measures. 📝 Excerpt from Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute Paper: "In 2021, there were only 9 available MIPS measures for diagnostic radiology versus 65 in family medicine. Physicians in radiology-only practices scored “significantly lower” in MIPS when compared to others working in doc groups where rads were not the predominant specialty." 🔗 Link: https://lnkd.in/d9SeZxYd Paper Authors: YoonKyung Chung, PhD, Lauren Nicola, MD, Chi-Mei Liu, Ph.D., MBA, MA, Elizabeth Rula, PhD

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has proposed a rule to improve patients’ access to medical images and curb the use of physical media in radiology. According to an article in Radiology Business, X-rays, CT scans and MRIs are often stored in platforms external to electronic health records, such as picture archiving and communication systems. However, this has made the electronic exchange of images more difficult, forcing patients to obtain their results via flash drives or CDs. In an effort to elevate the patient and clinician journey through advancements in medical image exchange, Onsite Women’s Health recently partnered with Medicom Technologies Inc. to set the stage for transformative advancements in breast cancer detection. “Following an extensive search, we determined that Medicom offers the most comprehensive solution for sharing images and reports across our more than 125 locations in 26 states,” said Jillian Wright, chief executive officer at Onsite Women’s Health. “This partnership and investment is part of our broader strategy to use technology to support our clinicians, detect breast cancer, and enhance patient care.” The American College of Radiology reported Thursday that the HHS is proposing to update regulations related to the certification of EHR systems and info blocking. The goal is for certified EHRs to include links to medical images beginning Jan. 1, 2028. ➡️ Learn more and read the full article in Radiology Business: https://bit.ly/4fEdLPS. #OnsiteTechnology #EHR #BreastCancer #Radiology #MedicalImagingExchange #MedicalImaging

KIMS Hospital successfully hosted an informative and well-attended webinar on Monday 9th September, focusing on an important topic for primary care providers; the Management of Palpitations and Atrial Fibrillation in Primary Care. The session was expertly led by Dr Shaumik Adhya, Cardiologist and electrophysiologist at KIMS Hospital and during the 1.5-hour session, Dr Adhya explored the various aspects of managing these common cardiovascular issues, making it highly relevant for primary care practitioners. Key areas covered included: Case Study: Discussing a real-life patient scenario. Palpitations: Understanding their causes and implications in clinical practice. Atrial Fibrillation (AF): In-depth analysis of AF, its risk factors, and complications. Patient Profiles: Identifying which patient types are most at risk. Diagnosis: Best practices for diagnosing palpitations and AF in primary care settings. Treatment Goals: Defining appropriate treatment objectives for different patient profiles. Treatment Options: A review of the latest available therapies and interventions. Referral Criteria: Guidance on when to escalate care and refer to specialists. We were delighted with the attendance of 94 who actively participating during the live webinar. The presentation sparked strong audience engagement, with attendees asking thoughtful questions and interacting throughout the session. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants praising the relevance and clarity of the content. We often hear that "a rising tide lifts all ships," but when it comes to healthcare, that tide isn’t lifting everyone equally. As highlighted in a recent article from the Annals of Internal Medicine, the care patients receive after leaving the hospital is just as crucial as the care they receive within it. Unfortunately, disparities in post-hospitalization for cardiac care may be worsening, leaving vulnerable populations even further behind. Effective recovery doesn’t end at discharge—it requires ongoing support, access to follow-up care, and clear communication between patients and providers. However, these essential elements are not accessible to everyone, particularly disadvantaged populations, deepening existing health inequities. It's clear that to improve health outcomes for all, we need to address these disparities head-on. Equitable post-hospital care is not just an add-on—it's a necessity. Let’s work together to ensure that every patient has the support they need to fully recover, no matter where they start. https://lnkd.in/e-55k-3n #HealthcareEquity #PostHospitalCare #HealthDisparities #PatientCare

Is prehospital administration of Diltiazem safe and how effective is it at treating A-Fib? 🚑💔 Researchers from Johns Hopkins and the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems dove into this question, focusing on patients treated for A-Fib between 2019 and 2022. Here's what they found: 📊 Study Overview: 2254 patients were included in the study. ➊ A significant 63.8% showed clinical improvement ➋ 27.3% achieved rate control ➌ Adverse events were minimal (3.5%). 💡 Key Findings: ➡ Diltiazem proved to be effective and safe for most patients. ➡ Adverse events were more likely in patients with the following: 1. Baseline SBP <140 mmHg 2. Baseline Heart rate <120 bpm 3. Received Nitroglycerin ➡ Older patients (over 50) were less likely to see clinical improvement. 🧐 Conclusion: ✦ Prehospital diltiazem administration is generally safe and effective for treating rapid atrial fibrillation, with certain patient groups requiring careful consideration. Kudos to Ellen P., Matthew Levy MD, Timothy Chizmar, MD, FACEP, FAEMS, Ruben Troncoso, Eric Garfinkel, and Asa Margolis, MD for their contribution to the EMS evidence base.
