Today, I honor, recognize, and thank our nation’s veterans, who, with courage, selflessness, and determination, have fought to preserve our freedoms and make the world a better place. Like in every aspect of the US, Latinos- in particular- have also left an indelible mark on our country’s history through their military service. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2023, Hispanic or Latino veterans constituted 8% of the total U.S. veteran population which is equivalent to approximately 1.5 million individuals. This reflects an important 25% increase from 1.2 million in 2008. Projections indicate that the proportion of Hispanic veterans will continue to rise, reaching 13.7% of the total veteran population by 2040. The Library of Congress collection, “Hispanics in Service,” features personal narratives and photographs of many of these Hispanic veterans. This important work offers striking images and poignant stories that highlight how, whatever their background of heritage, US Hispanics have always found opportunities without impediments to honorably carry the uniforms of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, protecting our nation, defending our values and shaping our future. The mission of the American Legion is to enhance the well-being of America's veterans, their families, our military, and our communities by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.[3] The key pillars of the American Legion's mission are: 1. Veterans: Providing services and support to veterans such as VA benefits claims counseling, advocacy for the VA healthcare system, education benefits, career services, and support for homeless veterans. 2. Defense: Supporting active military personnel, reserve components, and advocating for national security, quality of life, and benefits for service members. 3. Children & Youth: Offering youth programs like American Legion Baseball, scholarships, oratorical contests, Boys State/Nation, and support for children in need. 4. Americanism: Promoting patriotism, respect for the flag, National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance, and good citizenship. The American Legion is devoted to upholding the U.S. Constitution, maintaining law and order, preserving memories of military service, and consecrating comradeship through mutual helpfulness. Its motto is "Veterans Strengthening America."

Defender of the Republic I cannot recommend enough the fantastic biography of George C. Marshall, an inspiring leader, potential role model for nowadays junior and senior officers alike. My two main takes from this book, among many : 1/ Speak true to power 2/ Make it a lifelong attitude because it is not something you grow when you're on the flag officers list He noticeably enforced this rule as early as a major, in 1917, with general Pershing, and went on with president Roosevelt as a young brigadier. https://lnkd.in/ekCPMcVy
