Today is February 1st which signifies the kickoff of 2024 #blackhistorymonth Every Black History Month, we celebrate a legacy of #resilience and #achievement while emphasizing the theme of #blackexcellence and our #collectivefuture. A time for reflection and authentic commitment. It's a time to honor #trailblazers who've shattered barriers, from activists and artists to scientists and leaders. Reflecting on the rich tapestry of accomplishments, we draw inspiration from the triumphs of the past to shape a more #inclusive and #equitable future. #blackexcellence is not just a historical narrative but a living, evolving force, driving progress in every field. This month serves as a reminder to #acknowledge and #amplify the contributions of Black individuals whose stories are often overlooked. By recognizing these achievements, we #propel ourselves towards a future where diversity, multiculturalism and excellence go hand in hand. this month and onwards is an opportunity for #unity, #reconciliation, and a #commitment to dismantling systemic inequalities, fostering a world where everyone can achieve their full potential, regardless of their background. Remember #blackpeople are not only #black in February, we are 365 days in a year and every second of our existence. whatever you do this month, do it 365 days in a year. that is what authentic commitment means. Do you know there’s a platform where you can write articles and share your ideas? If your answer is no, please take a moment to read this message. There is an initiative called True Culture University that can help you. True Culture University is a Pan-African collegiate platform dedicated to cultivating a Black student experience that showcases and amplifies the goals of Pan-Africanism through various mediums. They have developed a portal at truecultureu.com where you can explore their initiatives. In the meantime, I invite you to read an article I recently wrote, which you can access through this link: (https://lnkd.in/e7XAUjiE).

As Black women, we have experienced the trauma of our intellect, leadership, and person being constantly challenged and erased. Let's call it what it is: Misogynoir. Misogynoir, as coined by Dr. Moya Bailey, is defined as the ways anti-Black and misogynistic representation shape broader ideas about Black women, particularly in visual culture and digital spaces. 👉🏾 The negative impact of misogynoir across all sectors, not just digital media, has continued to be detrimental to the livelihood of Black women. 👉🏾 In public and medical health, this concept is crucial as it underscores the need to address not only the physical health disparities that Black women face but also the mental and emotional toll of misogynoir. 📔 Learn more in Dr. Bailey’s book: Misogynoir Transformed: Black Women’s Digital Resistance. https://lnkd.in/gj3WepTX #CiteBlackWomenSunday #publichealth #academia #TSL

Interesting take on the problems with merit in America and the world right now. We need a better way to measure someone's worth. Worth in the nature of what sort of job they have (eg who's "essential"? Are they being paid/treated as an "essential person"?) and worth as in properly measuring their aptitudes empirically (I am sure there have been math geniuses lost to the world merely by the nature of their upbringing, placement in the world, or other irrelevant factors). The way we have general American advancement now is quite biased towards the haves, and there are many paper-walls, pay-walls and time-sink-walls if one would want to have any hope of overcoming that bias. One should not be considered qualified for something because of a sheet of paper (or racial or familial heritage), rather, one should be considered qualified for a school, subject, or line of work because of the ability to do the work well. We need a way to measure qualification and merit other than, or in addition to the one we have now.
