Are we witnessing the end of the effectiveness of towed artillery? The US Army has conducted a Tactical Fires Study analysing the future of artillery. At the recent Global Force Symposium General James E Rainey, Commanding General Futures Command, provided his conclusions from the study: 1️⃣ Innovate at the round - there are huge opportunities in energetics and additive manufacturing. 2️⃣ A better armoured howitzer is a priority and there are some great capabilities out there. 3️⃣ Light infantry and striker formations need mobile indirect fires - "The future is not bright for towed artillery". 4️⃣ Autonomous and robotic cannon solution for joint forceable entry formations are required. 5️⃣ The suite of mortars need to be reviewed and autonomy and robotics leveraged. At the beginning of our DARPA support we were allowed to go wild with possible ideas for the combat simulations of the generation-after-next, so that our architectures would not be in the way if we ever get this far. AFWERX Open Topic Let's break down some differences: ⛵The #NavySBIROpenTopic: -- Part of the Department of the Navy's (DoN) broader Small Business Innovation Research program and focuses on mission-critical needs. -- The DoN SBIR Office works with the Navy's Systems Commands (SYSCOMs) to identify technology focus areas that are announced during the Open Topic pre-release. -- Because the SYSCOMs have predetermined these focus areas, proposals submitted should focused on the sponsoring SYSCOM as the customer and end user for the projects they propose. -- Last year, the Navy only had one SBIR Phase I Open Topic round and we expect a similar schedule this year. ✈️The #DepartmentOfAirForce (DAF) SBIR Open Topic, (run by #AFWERX and #SpaceWERX) -- Designed to be more inclusive, allowing commercial industries to propose any dual-use technology solution that can benefit the Airmen or Guardians. -- DAF SBIR Phase I Open Topic proposals can be submitted without a predefined end-user or customer, emphasizing a broader scope of technological innovation. -- DAF SBIR Phase II's (Follow on Phase II or Direct to Phase II) require a Customer Memorandum with signatures from a Customer, End User, and Technical Point of Contact (TPOC). -- The DAF has multiple SBIR Phase I and Phase II Open Topic rounds each year offering more opportunities for industry.
