Last week, our team [Reason, Matter, Universe] competed in the Rhein-Main-Universitäten science contest where we had to answer challenging questions live—and make the audience laugh while doing it. With a diverse team background (chemistry, physics, biology, and philosophy), we brought science to life with humor and wit! Here are the questions we tackled: 🐔 Can chickens remember human faces? 💊 Are food supplements worth it? 🌌What was before the Big Bang? 🤖 How would AI-only friendships shape future generations? ✨How do I explain horoscopes are useless? This experience showed us that science communication isn't just about knowledge—it's about connection, curiosity, and sometimes, comedy. Whether it’s chickens or cosmology, making complex ideas fun brings science closer to everyone. Thanks a lot to the organization team, we had a lot of fun! This, and other classics of science fiction, are the inspiration for the new space barons in their run to colonise Mars, the first step towards the creation – as they say – of an interplanetary species. These ambitions mix and merge with artificial intelligence, and with other ideas which so far have only been science fictional, such as human-like robots and the transfer of human consciousness to non-biological platforms, concepts which play a key role in the contemporary landscape of exponential technological acceleration. We will explore these themes together to understand whether there is a future (and what it may be like) for mankind among the stars.

The unpredictability, the detours, the “how did this even happen?” moments – they’re not flaws in the process. They are the process. Tackling science’s wickedest problems means embracing the chaos, finding the patterns, and recognizing that every twist is an opportunity to look deeper, rethink, and innovate in ways we didn’t see coming. Ways of Thinking - Richard Feynman Joy, curiosity and persistence are the keys to unlocking your genius. The challenge for most of us is that we study to get the grade, to get the degree to get the job, to get the house to get the stuff...when we should be pursuing the path that connects our purpose with our raison d'etre. Our minds have been trained to take the test that our schools tell us is the measure of our understanding and the pathway to success. The real test is the one outside the classroom. This is the test we should be preparing for... The pathway to originality and genius is laid out beautifully in this brief interview with Nobel Prize winning Physicist Richard Feynman. Joy, curiosity and persistence with a large dose of imagination are the keys to discoveries about you and the Universe. The ancient Greek philosophers observed "man is most nearly himself when he achieves the seriousness of a child at play"... I have studied and applied this approach for myself and for my students with great success. 𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝟏𝟖𝟑𝟗…. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐫𝐰𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 (𝐅𝐑𝐒). This was a significant achievement for Darwin for a number of reasons: 💥 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Darwin had already started making significant contributions to the scientific community, particularly through his observations from the HMS Beagle voyage. Being elected an FRS was a recognition of his growing reputation as a scientist, even before his ground breaking work on the Origin of Species was published in 1859. 💥 𝐀 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: The Royal Society was (and still is) one of the most prestigious scientific institutions. Membership provided Darwin access to leading minds, resources and a network that likely helped refine and share his ideas. 💥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐨𝐫: The fellowship symbolised a dedication to advancing knowledge based on careful observation, experimentation and peer validation. 𝐀 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 ⭐ 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 "𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲" ⭐ At the time of his election, Darwin was in his early 30s and still developing his theories. We can take this as a reminder that recognition often follows effort and consistent contributions, even when you're still on the journey.
