My second year of design school was packed full of lessons. It taught me how to manage my time, where to focus my energy, and a ton of skills I never thought I'd learn. Most importantly, a round of applause for this one, people: I had only a couple of all-nighters! A huge improvement from last year. 👏 You might remember the exact moment you learned some of these lessons back in the day, or you might just be getting started on your design journey, either way, this one’s for you. Here are the 12 things I learned during my second year of design school... 1. You have to be the one to set deadlines and requirements for yourself 2. Work hard enough and the opportunities start to come looking for you 3. A few extra points aren't worth killing yourself over 4. If you feel overwhelmed by your own design, it might be a sign to simplify 5. No design project, done the right way, is ever done alone 6. Always talk to the people you're designing for 7. The quicker you start, the faster it'll be over 8. You're not supposed to learn everything all at once 9. Putting effort into your relationships with others pays off 10. Just because you change directions doesn't mean you're behind 11. Stop letting people be too soft on you 12. Betting on yourself is one of the best things you can do 💡I go into a lot more detail in the article on my blog, which is linked in the comments. Check it out if you're curious.💡 I'm about halfway done with my design education and I'm looking forward to the things I'll learn in the future. So now that you've heard from me, I'd like to hear from you. What are some things of the biggest things you learned in design school that still help you out today? Let me know below 👇 I'll be taking notes! ✍️🤓 - 👋 I'm Rebecca Scarbrough, an Industrial Design student at Georgia Tech and the Founder of Design Does That, a blog dedicated to observing the field of design from a student's perspective Follow me if you'd like to tag along throughout my design school experience! The hit we all take to become good designers I find some of the feedback I hear so funny sometimes Everyone tries to walk a fine line between being too harsh and too soft You can't blame them, we all do it, but it's hilarious Ever heard things like this? 🗣️ "I don't know if this was intentional, but..." 🗣️ "You might want to think about... how that looks to... other people." 🗣️ "Wow, it's really coming together!" (says someone about your final model) The best kind of feedback is honest, keeps in mind constraints, and is straight to the point In fact, I think people need to be a little harder on us sometimes What are some other pieces of funny feedback you've gotten before that have left you baffled or feeling completely roasted? - 👋 I'm Rebecca Scarbrough, an Industrial Design student at Georgia Tech and the Founder of Design Does That, a blog dedicated to observing the field of design from a student's perspective Follow me if you'd like to tag along throughout my design school experience! I frequently get enquires for placements for students considering architecture at University level. If that’s YOU, then consider my responce. Architecture is a very broad discipline and I would suggest going straight from your current study path you gain some life experience, people often say take a year out prior but what to do in that time before engaging in 'reading architecture'... I would suggest that you seek some work in theater, such as some set design, prop making or stage work setting up sets or in the carpentry shop. I would suggest looking at numerous production companies who are involved in the huge Netflix market for movies and popular series or even opera. This would expose you to a diverse range of talent, skills and design. You should also start using some 3d modeling software, such as archicad, sketchup, Rihno, photo shop and even some of the generative AI visualization tools, without knowledge you will struggle. you can have free copies with student licence Technology plays a huge role in the business and the sooner you become familiar the better. I would sugest that you watch the Netflix series Abstract: https://lnkd.in/eJmUHsJ8 Also watch some of frank gehry documentarys youtube. Look at https://lnkd.in/edj7swd8 Such an abundance of research you can do...even https://lnkd.in/eMysYcD6. So prior to running into 3 years, a mountain of student debt, be sure its what your interested in and have an evolving passion for. Dont waist your university years thinking its one big party, there is allot you can gain from your studies just be committed to them. Dom
