As passenger numbers in rail transport increase, the demands on the mode of transport are also changing. Long-distance journeys should be as fast as possible from A to B and trains should be designed to be barrier-free. The Deutsches Zentrum für Schienenverkehrsforschung (DZSF) will soon be conducting research into how these requirements can be met and to what extent concepts such as #Hyperloop are already fully developed. ‼️🚆‼️ Trains are intelligent agents able to self-organise and determine the best traffic management strategy without the control of any central authority, through a decentralised consensus process. This the core idea of our paper “Towards self-organizing railway traffic management: concept and framework” now available at https://lnkd.in/d-MNTtpx Furthermore: 1. We designed the steps to make such decentralised system deployable on real infrastructures. 2. We provided a preliminary proof of concept by letting trains self-organise on the portion of the French line between Rosny sur Seine and St. Etienne de Rouveray. 3. Our paper has been selected as one of the TOP10 best papers of the RailBalgrade2023 conference. 4. The Digital Railway is the industry's plan for driving digitalisation - essentially targeting digital systems to increase rail capacity and improve network performance. The demand on our railways continues to escalate, meaning that we are running out of capacity at key pinch-points, leading to congestion for passengers and freight services. We need to find innovative ways of squeezing more from the existing network by targeted deployment of relevant digital technologies. Therefore, the question is not whether to introduce these technologies, but how quickly we can adapt and deploy innovative solutions to solve critical capacity and performance challenges on the rail network. #railinnovation #digitalrail #railwaymodernisation #morson
