How far in advance can you book European train tickets and passes ❓ That’s a question we often get from our dear customers! And one can easily understand why! Booking in advance is convenient, but it also has financial perks. 💸 The first tickets launched by a train operator for a given route are often the cheapest tickets you will find for that journey. Train operators typically only have a limited number of tickets at the low launch price, so it is best to book as soon as they go live. 🚆 Now, if we go back to our initial question, one simple answer may be: it depends on the country and the train operator. I need an early train into London. Jump onto the different booking sites and have a look at what is available. Since COVID there are certainly not as many trains available as there used to be in the early morning, but managed to find one that will get me to where I need to be at the time I need to be there. Great Lets get this booked. Its a pre-booking so it will be cheaper - even better. My jaw hits the floor - £189 each way This is not first class - I don't even want to look at how much that will cost. This is the only train available at this time from the station I need to leave from It is direct, I would be happy to change, but that isn't an option. 2 hour journey on the East Coast Main Line from South Yorkshire. If I drive it will be a four hour drive and I will need to deal with the clean air charge (not the end of the world), but will arrive feeling tired. (Need to be there for 8am) Lets look at a hotel - The Easter holidays are upon us - most places are booked already, those that aren't are around £100 per night - ok, not too bad, but I still have to pay out over £150 return in train tickets, or deal with 8 hours of driving. We are encouraged to use alternative transport to cars. The prices are being driven up so that it becomes cost prohibitive The availability of these alternatives are becoming less so we are forced either drive of spend extra on these alternative options. Why is the cost of traveling to London over three times that of travelling half the distance? In these times of economic uncertainty, finding hundreds of pounds for one days travel within a country the size of the UK is not with in everyone's reach and certainly not something that is justifiable when taking in to consideration it is possible to take a holiday abroad for the same amount.

Understanding Train Ticket Waitlist: PQWL Introduction: Booking train tickets in India can sometimes be a bit of a puzzle, especially when faced with waiting lists like PQWL. The Pooled Quota Waiting List (PQWL) is one of several types of waiting lists used by the Indian Railways. It's essential to grasp what PQWL means and how it affects your chances of getting a confirmed ticket. What is PQWL? PQWL stands for Pooled Quota Waiting List. It's a specific category of waiting list that applies to train tickets. When you book a ticket, you might find yourself on a PQWL, which essentially means you're waiting for a pooled quota ticket on that particular train. Breaking Down PQWL/1 and PQWL/2: Let's decode what PQWL/1 and PQWL/2 mean: 1. PQWL/1: This indicates that you're the first person on the PQWL for that specific train. Essentially, you're at the front of the line among those waiting for the pooled quota tickets. However, PQWL tickets are only assigned after other quotas, like the General Waiting List (GNWL), have been exhausted. This can make the chances of confirmation quite slim. 2. PQWL/2: Similarly, PQWL/2 means you're the second person on the PQWL. While being higher up on the list is better, it's important to understand that PQWL tickets generally have lower chances of confirmation compared to other types of waiting list tickets. Chances of Confirmation in Two Months: Now, let's discuss the likelihood of these PQWL tickets getting confirmed within a two-month timeframe: - Priority: PQWL tickets are usually at a disadvantage when it comes to confirmation because they're considered only after other quotas have been filled. Passengers with higher-priority tickets, like those on the General Waiting List (GNWL), get preference. - Factors Affecting Confirmation: Various factors influence the chances of confirmation, such as the train route, time of booking, and cancellations by other passengers. Sometimes, if there are many cancellations or if the train route is popular, there might be a better chance of your PQWL ticket getting confirmed. - Keep Checking Status: It's crucial to keep an eye on the ticket status as the journey date approaches. The status can change due to cancellations or changes in quotas, so regularly checking can help you stay informed about the likelihood of your ticket getting confirmed. - Online Tools: Thankfully, there are online tools and the IRCTC website where you can check the current status and trends of your PQWL tickets. Night trains are being revived across the world. It is time to bring back a night train between Auckland and Wellington. In an article on the Greater Auckland blog site, Patrick Reynolds sets out the many reasons why a night train would be a viable alternative to driving or flying. “Annually, there are roughly 5 million airline journeys between Akl and Wgtn. In order to fill two trains, six nights a week, you’d only need about 2.7% of current flyers to switch to the train. And that’s not counting current drivers, or bus users, let alone any further expansion of the market – for example, how many would-be trips are currently not taken by reluctant flyers?” https://lnkd.in/gJsG_NgU

Overnight train services between Auckland and Wellington are nice to have and would need to operate on a commercial basis. NZTA will not fund two over night services as it would deemed to be non essential., If this country is serious about passenger train services across the 13 regions that currently have rail connectivity, it would need be frequent regional/inter-regional passenger train services that is jointly funded by regional councils with funding from NZTA through the National Land Transport Fund and cash fares. Currently, the national rail network is a 'closed access' predominately freight network and would the network owner - Kiwirail Holdings Ltd will not allow an external commercial passenger train operator accessing the network. The priority is to re-introduce frequent regional/inter-regional passenger train services.

LinkedIn asked me about public transport fare structures and unsurprisingly my reply was too verbose for their reply window, so here it is in full: --- Airlines, cruise ship operators, coach companies, long distance rail companies and hotels providing static tourism services have been using the yield management model since the mid 90s. So the temptation is to ask why we aren't using more of this for local public transport services. The main answer must come down to fairness and ease of understanding, but also the externalities of local and regional transport. If somebody chooses to book a flight from, let's say Birmingham, then it's not within the remit of the West Midlands combined authority to try and encourage them to take the train instead, but it's absolutely within their remit to get them to take the train to the airport, or to use trains for any other journey within the region. This is why we should be looking at what already happens with a peak time fare cap. However, the cap locally is £2.80, with a maximum direct journey of about an hour. The entire state of Queensland is introducing 50c fares from August. We need to encourage local rail and bus usage as a means of encouraging people out of cars, whilst also starting a grown up conversation about variable road pricing. Nobody talks about a war on plane passengers when air fares go up, they just accept it as market forces. We need variable road user fees, with a similar discounting system that already applies to railcards and local transport permits. If we really want to pop a cherry on the icing on the cake, then we should also do what Florence is doing and pay people a per mile stipend for cycling.
