Rwanda and Kenya have signed a protocol to ensure smooth transport in their respective regions. New infrastructure investments on new transport are planned in the region. A recent report on The State of Africa’s Infrastructure 2024, published by the Africa Finance Corporation, reveals that the African ‘ports race’ that started in the mid-2000s has resulted in significant capacity additions at African ports. However, this expansion has not translated into more efficient and integrated logistics supply-chains across the continent. It further states that while ports are monopolising private sector interest, the rest of the value-chain, notably roads and railways, remains under-funded, under-developed and fragmented. This proposal by China Civil to spend more than $1 billion to revitalize the Tanzania Zambia Railway Kine and operate it commercially will certainly help bridge the infrastructure gap. Transport ministers from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC convened to accelerate the completion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha, Kenya, to neighboring countries. Their meeting in Mombasa focused on developing a roadmap for the SGR's swift implementation and joint mobilization of resources for its extension across borders. The $1.7 billion #LobitoCorridor project aims to secure vital mineral supply chains. What to know: On February 8, the Lobito Corridor Private Sector Investment Forum in #Zambia concluded with great optimism. This gathering, hosted by the White House’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI) in #collaboration with the #AfricaFinanceCorporation, underscored the transformative potential of the Lobito Corridor #rail project. It also positioned the project as a focal point for #publicprivatepartnerships with the potential to yield shared prosperity for Americans and Africans. The Lobito Corridor project entails the construction of almost 350 miles of rail line in Zambia, along with hundreds of miles of feeder #roads, linking the southern part of The #DRC and the northwestern part of Zambia to regional and global markets via Angola’s Port of Lobito. It also includes the ongoing effort by the Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR) to upgrade and operate the #Benguela rail line (over 800 miles) that connects #Angola to #DRC, with AFC’s assistance.
