Today is #EarthDay. Did you know that more than 200 million tonnes of asbestos has been mined. It has been mixed with other material such as cement to create around 1 billion tonnes of asbestos containing material. All of this still remains in the built environment or in landfill. None of it has been destroyed. Asbestos should not be left in landfill for future generations to deal with or be exposed to. It is bad for people and bad for the planet. Thermal Recycling diverts asbestos away from landfill. Better for people. Better for the planet.

In honor of July being National Grilling Month, we would like to share some tips on properly disposing of your grilling waste. To prevent trash fires from occurring, allow the coal to cool for at least 48 hours before placing the coal in a metal trash bin. Also, remember not to dispose of propane tanks in the trash or recycling. These tanks must be returned to the appropriate facility for proper disposal. Keep the summer grilling season safe with these tips! #NationalGrillingMonth

Ever wonder where your trash goes after it’s collected at the curb? Our team created this video to help! The Crapo Hill Landfill was engineered with the highest level of environmental controls available and provides a valuable, cost-effective service for its member communities of Dartmouth and New Bedford. Once it reaches capacity, the waste will likely need to be sent by rail to landfills in other states at an increased financial and environmental cost. This is already the reality for about 1/3 of the waste generated in Massachusetts. That is not a sustainable long-term solution if you ask me. Despite negative perceptions, landfills play an important role in today’s society. Airspace should be reserved for materials with no better alternative, and much of what is received can be recycled, reused, or composted. It is important for everyone to be mindful of the waste they produce and the effects it has on the environment, and to seek other options before throwing things away, because there is no such thing as “away” when it comes to your trash. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! And Compost! Don’t Be Trashy! Think about the future! Refuse single use!
