Slash and burn agriculture devastates rainforests and communities, leading to environmental and societal decline. A sustainable alternative is the Inga alley cropping, which allows farmers to build soil and grow crops in one place year after year without the need for chemicals or deforestation. When we delve deeper into the concept of farming and our consumption of fruits and vegetables, we encounter an intriguing paradox: Are we farming to sustain our lives by eating these plants, or are the trees and plants farming us to thrive and live their own lives? This thought-provoking question suggests that perhaps trees and plants are cultivating us in some way, growing us to ensure their own survival. It’s a fascinating perspective to consider: maybe, just maybe, they are the true farmers, and we are their crops. This idea challenges our traditional understanding of the relationship between humans and nature. It opens up a whole new way of thinking about the interconnectedness of life on Earth. Are we, in essence, being farmed by the plants that we nurture and consume? #NatureParadox #InterconnectedLife #FarmingPhilosophy #PlantsVsHumans #ThoughtExperiment

TIGER MT AUSTRALIA - The approach taken with the Tiger MT in Australia is that organic material is mixed into the partly sandy soil and the soil is loosened deeply. The remaining fine material on the surface is washed in by rainfall, and disturbing layers form over the years. Initial experiences show that breaking these disturbing layers and simultaneously levelling and consolidating the soil with the Tiger MT has a positive effect and prevent the creation of new disturbing layers. The main objective is to maximise water absorption after rainfall and increase the availability for the crop. In combination with a MiniDrill, the Tiger is also used for seeding catch crops. In December 2023, our in-house impact team visited Eainme and Kyaiklat Townships and met with over 100 paddy farmers to gain better insights on “No-burn Rice Farming,” our new regenerative alternative to open-field burning. The farmers interviewed shared that they burned their fields before the monsoon season because they needed to clear the crop residues within two weeks to prepare for the summer paddy season. For the No-burn practice, the main barrier to adoption was access to water because of late monsoon rains and low water levels in the Delta before the following dry season. One farmer, U Than Myint (pictured top right), shared “I applied the practice before the monsoon season, and it made the straw decompose quickly and easy to plow. This also brought benefits by saving costs on inputs, restoring soil health, and increasing yields. So, I don’t need to worry anymore about the time to clear the land before the next season.” #impactassessment #paddy #noburn #regenerative #proximitydesigns

No till farming 🚫 Depsite harvesting less than ideal yields this year, I hear a lot of western Canadian farmers celebrating how “awesome the stubble and residue looks” in the early cereal grains. I find that sentiment kind of funny (but in a good way). It sheds light on the realities of farming in our semi arid climate - how we can have a smile and be happy about straw even when our grain yields might be low. It’s the grain driving our revenue…. Right? No till has been practiced in large areas of the prairies for 3+ decades. This is not a source of innovation anymore - it’s the bare minimum standard. And without the past adoption, we may not be farming here right now. Leaving as much “stubble” as possible is always on top of mind when we are cutting our crop. Taller the stubble - the more snow it will catch and trap in the winter. Taller stubble also fosters a more ideal growing environment for seedlings to grow up through next year. A high C:N residue like this durum crop offers excellent armour for the soil against wind and water erosion. At the end of the day, it’s all about saving as much water as possible when we get it. While it’s good to acknowledge our PAST victories like the adoption of no till. It is also an opportunity to avoid being stuck in the past and continue to drive ecological regeneration and soil function in the PRESENT - to allow for a better TOMORROW. #soil #durum #cropresidue #notill #soilarmour #soilhealth #harvest24 #westerncanada #water #sustainability #regenerative

Things you may not know about Tower Farms... Micro pots are perfectly designed for high-density planting, enabling us to cultivate up to twice as much produce in the same area as our standard grow pots. This efficiency significantly boosts yields per square foot, making it an excellent choice for commercial ventures. Due to the closer proximity of the grow ports in micro pots, they are not recommended for larger crops requiring more space. Instead, they are best suited for frequently harvested herbs and leafy greens. #towerfarms #towergarden #aeroponics #verticalfarming #innovativefarming #agriculture #greenhousetowers

🚜🌽 From seed to harvest, farming is an art of patience and precision. Here’s a journey with our farmer using DeerWall: #PickingSeeds Our farmer selects the best corn seeds, ensuring a high-yield crop. Each seed holds the promise of growth and bounty. #Surveying Land Next, it's time to survey the land, determining the perfect spots for planting. This careful planning sets the stage for a successful crop. #PlantingCorn With the land ready, corn seeds are sown into the earth, each one planted with precision. Bio stimulants are used to enhance growth, ensuring robust and healthy plants. #Harvesting As the corn reaches maturity, it's harvested with care. The results? A bountiful crop, thanks to the use of DeerWall and bio stimulants. #Benefits Using DeerWall protects crops from deer depredation, ensuring that the hard work of planting and nurturing isn’t lost. Bio stimulants further enhance the growth process, leading to better yields and healthier plants. One farmer at a time, we're making a difference. From seeds to harvest, the journey is a testament to dedication, innovation, and sustainable farming practices. 🌱✨ Luis Naranjo SetaTech #Farming #luisnaranjo #SustainableAgriculture #DeerWall #BioStimulants #HarvestSuccess #setatech #deerwall #smart4growing Blair Blacker Lisa Chen

My partner Christina Singh is currently in Minas Gerais, Brazil, working with GrowGrounds partners and coffee farmers to convert #monoculture #coffee farming into #agroforestry systems. The consequences of the ongoing #drought in the region are deeply alarming. We know that the drought's devastating extent is due to human intervention in the form of deforestation and monoculture agriculture. We MUST change this. We MUST restore nature and forests in coffee growing regions. That's our mission in GrowGrounds. Together with like-minded partners who share our believes and overall vision, we are converting depleted agricultural land in the world's coffee regions into biodiverse and carbon sequestering agroforestry systems. You and your company can be part of the mission, too. The is so much we can achieve together and our partners include companies both in and outside the coffee industry. But the clock is ticking. #WeMustActNow. Contact us if you want to know more. #WeGrowBusinessesByGrowingNature

5 Days of Regen: Day 1 - don't disturb the soil 🌱 Over the next 5 days, we're delving into each of the core 5 principles of #RegenerativeAgriculture and giving out a key farming tip for each of them 👀 Healthy soil is a living ecosystem teeming with beneficial microbes. Tilling disrupts this delicate balance, releasing carbon and hindering water retention 💧 Farming Tip: Opt for no-till planting or cover cropping to keep the soil covered and undisturbed. No till planting uses specialised equipment to create a channel that is just spacious enough for seeds to be planted, minimising soil disturbance. Cover cropping is a farming practice that involves planting plants in fields between growing seasons to protect the soil and improve its health. Tomorrow we'll discuss maximising crop diversity so make sure to check back for more insights 🌾 #HealthySoil #NoTillFarming #RegenAg
