Exposed aggregate concrete is a concrete surface that has the "cream layer" removed to expose the rock or pebble. The type of rock or river-pebble is usually specified to give the concrete surface a decorative look. Exposed aggregate can be used on driveways, walkways, porch/patios, pool decks, retaining walls, etc. Exposed aggregate is very popular and looks amazing. It does need to be maintained by keeping a clear sealant, so the exposed river-pebble from coming loose due to freeze-thaw damage. Damage can be repaired but it hardly ever matches the original surface. Heritage Masonry Walls Key items that you need to be mindful of when looking to purchase an old dwelling. Heritage brick walls are built from soft clay brick and weak mortar which over time degrade and cause weakness in the overall structure. Unrestrained brickwork is also common. The highlighted cracking and movement in the attached photo is a result of applied loading to the wall where restraint changes. Also rising damp is a characteristic of the walls, as the sub-base has not been isolated from the upper walls. Damp walls will result in mould growth and potential damage to timber floors, architraves and skirting. These items can be rectified / treated but are typically quite an expensive exercise. A detailed Prepurchase inspection will pick up these items and will provide a basis for the financial offer.

Concrete underlayment is a thin coating material that is poured over a concrete substrate. The material smooths out imperfections, creating a flat base that is ready to accept a variety of other floor coverings, such as carpet, tile, vinyl, etc. Underlayment can provide a quick and affordable fix to floors that are heavily cracked, pitted, or uneven. Rather than ripping out and replacing the concrete subfloor, underlayment covers imperfections, provides a seal to prevent moisture damage, and is more cost-effective. Read all about the what, why, and how in our blog "Do's and Don'ts of Installing Concrete Underlayments and Overlays" here: https://hubs.ly/Q02G6Dyt0

🏗️ The Importance of Proper Concrete Surface Preparation for New Floors 🏗️ Before installing any new floor—whether it's epoxy, polyurethane, or tile—proper concrete surface preparation is crucial. It ensures strong adhesion, smooth application, and long-lasting performance. Without it, flooring can peel, crack, or fail prematurely. The process involves removing contaminants like dirt, oil, and old coatings, as well as leveling and smoothing the surface. This is done using specialized equipment such as grinders, shot blasters, and scarifiers to create a clean, textured profile that enhances adhesion and prevents future issues like delamination. Key reasons surface prep is vital: - Improves adhesion and bond strength - Levels and smooths the surface - Ensures durability under heavy traffic - Prevents moisture-related failures - Enhances aesthetics and safety By investing in proper surface preparation upfront, you avoid costly repairs and ensure your floors perform at their best. 🚧 Need expert surface prep and flooring installation?
