Last week, I was privileged enough to have an amazing conversation with an executive in the #cannabisindustry that I highly respect. As we were learning about one another, we had a friendly exchange around the jargon around #sativa, #hybrid and #indica. We both understood each others point of view - they mentioned that they were ready to get rid of consumer jargon around those strain distinctions. I politely disagreed. When questioned as to why, I said this. While it’s true that most cultivars that are common in the CA market today are extremely hybridized, I do think as an industry we have some work to do when it comes to both internal and external #education: in a nutshell - we haven’t given the consumer enough. They matter, just as much as the internal teams in dispensaries, although as a former dispensary operator I do admit that an informed and knowledgeable staff will sell the products that they like the most. I would love to move away from describing flower in terms of solely sativa, hybrid or indica. But think about how overwhelming a product menu can be for the consumer. It’s tough for even me to keep track of strains/origins/cultuvars, etc. I just don’t think we are there yet. Even though there’s so much more to the equation including form factor, terp/flavonoid profile & growing methods used, I would argue that most people, even in the industry, are not prepared to effectively educate in a fool proof manner. When I look around my network - i see a whole group of people who transitioned to AUCC from CBD/ Hemp and have partners using them to grow weed. This trend, however, doesn't apply to House of Sacci, a family-owned AUCC under the leadership of CEO, Mike Casacci. His decision to build equity as a brand instead of giving it away as a white-label/co-packer is paying off. By focusing on establishing their position as a premium New York flower brand, he has captured market share across the state. Mike's tenure as CEO can be marked by an understanding of the market dynamics. Product development, genetics and quality have been the differentiators. They run a very modern business - lean and mean like a fine oiled machine. I am seriously impressed every time I visit the WNY farm. When I asked about roadblocks: Mike mentioned that the early entry of Registered Organizations (ROs) from the medical sector and the varied product preferences across different locations add layers of complexity. With most of my experience in cannabis being on the supply side I was always a bit out of touch with the retail mesh point. Since opening Fire&Oak I've notice some interesting tendencies now that I'm spending more time in the shop. Here are 5 observations thus far on the NJ #cannabis supply chain: - Despite the large canopy that many MSOs have and the new cultivators coming online, quality flower and products are still in short supply. When good strains/products hit menus' they fly. - Many Account Execs , Wholesalers are becoming inundated and really struggling to keep up with the rapidly expanding retail market leaving many strained relationships between wholesaler and retailer and resulting in high turnover for sales folks. - The producers who provide quality samples to budtenders, specifically of products that are actually on the dispensaries menu- their products move! (who knew?!) - Exclusivity agreements between producers and retailers are starting to take shape given how many towns have allowed for bunching up of retail locations. - While I understand why - hardly any operators are growing Sativa's yet the market is very much demanding them.
