The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is investing nearly $2 billion in 38 projects across 42 states to update the U.S. power grid. These are crucial investments as grid capacity needs rise and extreme weather worsens. Say it with me: 👏 the U.S. electrical grid is out of date and needs to be rebuilt to meet our modern (and future) needs 👏 Who knows how the initiative linked below will turn out, but the point is that it represents an innovative approach to solving issues of growing demand weighing on aging infrastructure. Grid planners have access to increasing amounts of data, but translating that information into action has proven difficult—and with utilities doing their absolute best to prevent the development of microgrids and distributed networks, this type of high-level collaboration will hopefully provide direction for addressing the reliability challenges that plague our energy systems. The Texas grid *today* is facing outages because of climate change-related weather effects. It's no longer a matter of proving these updates are necessary, but of being pragmatic in their implementation.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $2.2 billion in funding for eight projects across 18 states to strengthen the electrical grid against increasing extreme weather, advance the transition to cleaner electricity and meet a growing demand for power. ➡ The money will help build more than 600 miles of new transmission lines and upgrade about 400 miles of existing lines so that they can carry more current. ➡ Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said the funding is important because extreme weather events fueled by climate change are increasing, damaging towers and bringing down wires, causing power outages. ➡ According to Princeton University’s “Net-Zero America” research, the United States will need to expand electricity transmission by roughly 60% by 2030 and may need to triple it by 2050. One of President Trump's first actions as the 47th President was to issue an executive order declaring an energy emergency. In typically florid prose it suggests: "The policies of the previous administration have driven our Nation into a national emergency, where a precariously inadequate and intermittent energy supply, and an increasingly unreliable grid, require swift and decisive action. Without immediate remedy, this situation will dramatically deteriorate in the near future due to a high demand for energy and natural resources to power the next generation of technology. The United States’ ability to remain at the forefront of technological innovation depends on a reliable supply of energy and the integrity of our Nation’s electrical grid. Our Nation’s current inadequate development of domestic energy resources leaves us vulnerable to hostile foreign actors and poses an imminent and growing threat to the United States’ prosperity and national security. These numerous problems are most pronounced in our Nation’s Northeast and West Coast, where dangerous State and local policies jeopardize our Nation’s core national defense and security needs, and devastate the prosperity of not only local residents but the entire United States population. The United States’ insufficient energy production, transportation, refining, and generation constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat to our Nation’s economy, national security, and foreign policy. In light of these findings, I hereby declare a national emergency." Yes, our grid infrastructure is aged. Yes, power demand is increasing due to factors the President actively supports like manufacturing and data centers. So one presumes in this emergency it is all energy hands on deck moment, or as it is sometimes termed an "all of the above" energy strategy. However, that same executive order defines energy as exclusive of most renewables. "(a) The term “energy” or “energy resources” means crude oil, natural gas, lease condensates, natural gas liquids, refined petroleum products, uranium, coal, biofuels, geothermal heat, the kinetic movement of flowing water, and critical minerals, as defined by 30 U.S.C. 1606 (a)(3)." He has even issued another EO to bar offshore wind permitting. That is leaving a lot of energy on the table, as solar is the cheapest and fastest growing form of power generation in the US and is increasingly paired with long duration storage to reduce intermittency. Renewables now represent about 20% of the grid mix, with wind and solar the majority of that. And solar is one of the fastest growing US manufacturing sectors as well, another of the President's focus areas. So by all means let's modernize the grid and create the additional power our growing economy needs. Let's also do it in the most efficient and cost effective way - which means using all the tools in the toolbox. https://lnkd.in/eTHbWq5H
