The most successful community-driven organizations don't just 'add-on' community building — they embed it into their core ethos. Here’s the truth: Community building is not a band-aid solution or just another marketing tactic. If approached as such, it's destined to fall flat. For a community strategy to truly thrive: Leadership Buy-In: It must be championed from the top. Leaders should understand its value and actively participate, lead by example, and allocate resources accordingly. Strategic Integration: It’s essential to weave community engagement into the broader business strategy, ensuring alignment with the company’s goals and vision. Organic Growth: Community initiatives should be nurtured and allowed to grow organically. Authenticity is the key. Members can discern between genuine engagement and superficial efforts. Community building is a commitment, a journey, and above all, a belief in the collective power of people. Leaders, the ball is in your court. Let's prioritize genuine community engagement and witness the ripple effects it can create!

I'll never get tired of saying this: People come for your community involvement → But they stay for the impact you make What builds respect: 1. Collaborative spirit: Working with others to achieve a greater good. 2. Diverse perspectives: Seeking out and valuing different viewpoints. 3. Shared ownership: Creating initiatives where everyone feels heard and involved. What builds a thriving community: 1. Intentional partnerships: Connecting with leaders and organizations for mutual benefit. 2. Respectful collaboration: Working together with an open mind and a shared vision. 3. Equitable impact: Ensuring everyone benefits from the initiatives you create. The best example of this? Communities solving real problems together! We don't need more division.↳ We need more collaboration.↳ We need more people focused on collective impact. #communityimpact #communitybuilding #socialimpact

Does your community ambition pass the dinner party test? If you can't talk about your community topic in an interesting, engaging and informative way to a stranger you just met at this dinner party...it's time to rethink where you are headed. 90% of builders in the community space are simply hiding behind complexity. The 10% who simplify and create opportunities for connection, these folks succeed. Simplicity is the game-changer. As a community leader, your choices are vast: - Create a vibrant, engaged community. - Foster a close-knit, supportive network. - Either way, be ready to step back, and watch members self-navigate. Unlocking this mindset? That's the real victory. Hearing success stories, seeing real connections, watching community evolve - this is why I'll never stop pushing for simplicity in community leadership. ------------ I write a short email every Friday on how to build communities that thrive. I recently had the honor to hear revitalization strategist Majora Carter discuss gentrification and community revitalization – reclaiming your community. For me, her insights transcended community development. She actually shed light for me on a theme I've been discussing recently – talent retention. It might seem like a stretch for me to connect reversing gentrification with employee retention. Wait. She touched on a profound truth. In disadvantaged communities, success is often measured by distancing oneself from their roots. Communities unintentionally send their brightest minds away, believing it's the surest path to success. This cycle results in a perpetual drain, leaving communities depleted of their most valuable assets. Her work invests, builds and creates programs within those communities to keep people growing and thriving in their neighborhoods. Can you see any similarities to your organization? How many times have we seen talented individuals pushed away when, with the right support, they could be flourishing? Do you want them to leave for a "better opportunity?" Like Majora's revitalization, you need to be strategic, make investments, build, and consider all aspects of a person. Doing this in your organization is a leadership skill that can redefine your business' success. Here are some insights: 1️⃣ Right Fit, Wrong Role: Not everyone excels in their current position. Recognize the mismatch (or outgrowth) and explore alternative roles that align with their skills and values. 2️⃣ Build Trust and Empathy: Cultivate a workplace where trust and empathy thrive. Understand your team members' perspectives to eliminate assumptions that might hinder collaboration. 3️⃣ Coaching and Training: Consider investing in programs to offer growth and new challenges. A well-designed improvement path can channel their potential toward organizational success. Are you gauging success by the "distance traveled" or the collective progress made? True success lies in nurturing and advancing our greatest assets, be they individual team members or entire communities. Postscript: Listening to her talk, I was excited to hear about what's happening in The Bronx. In addition to Majora and her Bronxlandia project, many good things like Haagen-Dazs ice cream, J.Lo (Jenny from the Block), and me (Mike from the Block 😁) all come from there! #revitalization #organizationaldevelopment #leadership #thebronx

Greetings, exceptional professionals! 🌟 Today, let's discuss a topic of utmost relevance: Building a Community . As leaders, entrepreneurs, trailblazers - we have all seen the enormous value of fostering strong, vibrant communities, both in our personal and professional lives. It's not just about making meaningful connections, but about creating an environment that stimulates growth, inclusivity and relentless innovation. Here's my equation for crafting a thriving community: 🌐 Collective Passion + Shared Vision + Continuous Engagement = Robust Community 🎯 Now, let's break it down. 1️⃣ Collective Passion: Our communities must ignite an underlying shared passion. This is the thread that links us, the emotional glue that keeps us unified. Whether it's passion for a unique technique, an innovative industry, or a common goal, it's our duty to surface and nourish it. 2️⃣ Shared Vision: A robust community bears a shared vision. A homogenous understanding of where we're going, how we're going to get there, and why the journey matters. This shared vision manifests a powerful conviction - an impervious driving force that propels us forward, even in the face of uncertainty. 3️⃣ Continuous Engagement: Community building doesn't stop at inception. It requires nurturing, constant feedback loops, shared learning and profound engagement. Regular interaction encourages trust, fosters collaboration, and ignites groundbreaking ideas. But beyond this equation, what’s the secret sauce? 🔐 Empathy. 🌈 Empathy encourages genuine connection, promotes understanding, and fosters an inclusive environment. It's the invisible hand that guides us to celebrate our differences, learn from diverse perspectives, and cultivate a truly enriched community experience. Remember: ➡️ Every community member is integral. ➡️ Every voice holds value. ➡️ Every interaction shapes the community. In conclusion, building a thriving community is a blend of art and science. It's more than just a group of people sharing a space. It's about fostering a sense of belonging, nurturing shared passions, aligning visions, and continuously engaging. And beyond all, it's about sprinkling everything we do with empathy. As we carry forward, let's ask ourselves: Are we building just networks, or are we building communities? 🌎💡 Let's curate spaces where ideas flourish, passions intertwine, and innovation emerges from collaboration. Continue inspiring, continue growing, and above all, continue building. 🚀 #CommunityBuilding #Leadership #Growth #Innovation

Diversity is key to building a thriving community! I’ve had the privilege of working with founders and industry leaders over the past 13 years. One common thread across successful community-building efforts is the critical role of diversity. Diversity enriches and strengthens any community. Here’s why: 🚀 Fostering innovation Diverse communities bring a variety of ideas and solutions to the table, fostering creativity and driving growth. 🚀 Building engagement A community that reflects a wide range of experiences is more relatable, fostering trust and encouraging that all information engagement. 🚀Driving thought leadership Diverse communities challenge the status quo and bring fresh perspectives, pushing industries forward. 🚀 Longevity Diversity ensures that all members feel valued and heard, essential for a community’s cohesion and longevity. 🚀 Reflecting global realities Communities that mirror the global landscape are better positioned to thrive. 🚀Accelerating community growth Studies show that diverse communities grow faster. According to McKinsey & Company, organisations with ethnically and culturally diverse leadership teams are 33% more likely to outperform their peers on profitability. 🤑 Diversity is not just a component of community-building; it is its cornerstone. 💡If you're hosting an event ensure you represent your diverse community with the right speakers and panellists! #Diversity #CommunityBuilding #Innovation #Eventribe
