yet2 had a great time volunteering at More Than Words. We sorted through more than 1,400 books, working alongside the young adult coordinators who work at More Than Words “to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business.” More Than Words works with some of the most vulnerable young adults in Greater Boston: those who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school. At More Than Words the young adults have a paying job that teaches them job skills, interpersonal skills, etc. while receiving focused support to ensure they persist in school and create plans for their future. #givingback #volunteering

For the last few years, I have had the honor of volunteering with Dallas CASA, an organization that recruits, trains, and supervises community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in protective care. Volunteering with this organization has not only been eye-opening, but heart-breaking at times. As an advocate for these children, our work involves meeting with kids on a monthly basis, advocating for their interests in court, and addressing any issues they face in school, health, or other areas of their lives. One of the most jarring realizations is that in many cases, there isn’t anyone else beyond us looking out for the kids. There is no backup. The system is overloaded and isn’t designed to deal with the complex problems that arise for these kids. The job of the advocate is to be that person that takes action and does all they can to intervene in the child’s life. This work is a reminder that as each of us observes the problems we have in this world, we can’t simply rely on the system or expect others to step up. It's easy to assume there are already measures in place or that someone else will take care of it. In reality- if we want to see change or make an impact, we have to do it ourselves. When we see issues in our community, we owe it to each other to bear the responsibility of change. We need to recognize that each of us has the power to make a difference.  By getting involved, we can help bridge the gaps and provide innovative solutions or much-needed support where it’s needed most. “Beyond Relaxation: Volunteering with Tribal & Orphan Children Fulfills the Soul” Those children came to this world, but to be an orphan or to be born into a place with limited opportunities is not their mistake. Yet, they face challenges that most of us cannot even imagine. In our bustling lives, we often seek moments of relaxation and tranquility. We plan trips, book vacations and look forward to escaping the routine. However, there is a way to find true fulfillment and relaxation that goes beyond mere recreation: spending a day with tribal or orphaned children who desperately need our support. Lack of support + Lack of resources + Crisis = #homelessness Yesterday #SCOTUS heard oral arguments in #JohnsonvGrantsPass, from which a decision could inform how the law impacts people who are living on the streets. No matter where you land on the issue, please consider: What if you were on the streets? What about your kids? What about your sibling or cousin? Parents? Would you be more motivated to "do something about it" then? I know there are the offenders and those that are manipulating or gaming the system, and that everyone makes decisions that lead somewhere... but that's not everyone that you see on the streets. The reality is that we're ALL a couple of steps away from losing everything and ending up there. In light of this, I'd like to encourage a few responses... First, the next time you see someone on the streets, reflect on your own heart posture towards the image-bearer whose story you don't know. They are of equal value, dignity, and respect, and we need not hold a position of pride or contempt in looking down on others whose circumstances are different from ours. Instead, consider a response of empathy, compassion, and partnership to know and help them. Second, if praying is your thing, please pray for the outcome of this decision, those advocating for human rights, and the people who will be impacted. Third, if you have any influence, which you do, consider speaking up in your local context, volunteering somewhere to help, donating to organizations that are doing amazing work already, and lending a hand to your neighbor. There are lots of people doing amazing work both locally and nationally (see short list below). The harvest is plenty, but the workers are few. This is a major crisis of our day. The only way for progress to be made is through holistic collaboration within communities for the betterment of all, from social services to housing. The poor will always be among us, but that doesn't give us a license to be apathetic until "the problem" is on our doorstep. How many children do you know? According to the governments recent figures 9% of children are disabled - if you know more than 11 children chances are you know of a young person with a disability and this doesn’t include children who are going through the diagnosis process or haven’t been counted for what ever reason - some figures put it as high as 1 in 8 children. Personal moment I feel like a constant failure I know I do a lot of good in the world - this isn’t a post asking you to tell me I’m great etc. The reason I feel like this is because there’s always so many more families needing help and there’s only so much Little Miracles Charity can do. I need your help! I need people who can give 2 hours a week and be empathetic to families and help them fill in forms to apply for essential equipment or benefits. The forms are quite straight forward after appropriate training but they are designed to trip families up, designed to make families concentrate on everything their child cannot do rather on the amazing human beings they are.
